    Ubuntu 9.10 NBR - looking v cool in Beta

    So i've been playing around with the 9.10 releases of Ubuntu NetBook Remix (NBR)
    Ubuntu main page here
    NBR official info here and useful info here.

    I've been using 9.04 NBR on my Acer Aspire One for the last 6 months, and overall really liked it with a couple of annoyances (such as intermittent wifi signals & reconnection issues, and also slightly rubbish video playback such as youtube inconsistencies).
    A quick trip back to the repair factory however lead to the mahcine being wiped, and so on it's return to me I tried 9.10 Alpha 5, which was the latest at the time.

    Initially it looked interesting, but was buggy and various bits either didnt work, video stutered etc, and the changes just looked wierd.
    The primary visual change was that the previous menu system on the right side, basically shortcuts to all the primary folders (video, desktop, music etc) had been amalgamated into one folder on the left, thereby freeing up all-important space for the primary icons. On a 1024 x 600 screen, this really makes a difference.

    As the updates went by, then to Alpha 6, then to Beta (which we are on now as i type this) this OS has absolutely transformed however and is now fantastic. I'd even go so far as to say that the NBR version should in fact be the default version at install even for desktops, it's that good.

    The new Intel drivers (which Phoronix describes in far more detail than i understand - their NBR preview is here) have also seriously helped video playback, and even some of the simpler 3d efects work well now (maximising and minimising windows has a lovely smooth 3d fold up / fold down effect), which although you'd be right to think "its 2009, we ought to have 3d effects" did not work properly, or easily, on previous versions using the Intel 945 graphics.

    All in all this thing works, nicely, smoothly, it's great. I've swapped Songbird (my previous media player of choice) to Banshee, and decided that even the .avi playback is as good, if not better, than i've ever seen before.

    Try it! I cant wait for the full 9.10 release!

    My dell mini has a cut down Ubuntu installed and I have issues with Wi-fi and stuttery video, I may have a look at this.

    Re: Ubuntu 9.10 NBR - looking v cool in Beta

    Is this the one that 'loads in 5 seconds' when using an SSD ?
    Kalniel: "Nice review Tarinder - would it be possible to get a picture of the case when the components are installed (with the side off obviously)?"
    CAT-THE-FIFTH: "The Antec 300 is a case which has an understated and clean appearance which many people like. Not everyone is into e-peen looking computers which look like a cross between the imagination of a hyperactive 10 year old and a Frog."
    TKPeters: "Off to AVForum better Deal - £20+Vat for Free Shipping @ Scan"
    for all intents it seems to be the same card minus some gays name on it and a shielded cover ? with OEM added to it - GoNz0.

    Cheers for the heads up, going to do a clean ubuntu 9.10 reinstall soon on it going live, i normally use Amarok 2.0 (KDE) for my av needs, but may try banshee under gnome to check it out.

    NBR 9.04 is a big sluggish on my Toshiba NB100 so I'm looking forward to the release of 9.10 and some decent Intel IGP drivers.

    Is that 8.04 with Dell's original interface? I thought that looked quite cool at first, but NBR came along and did the same but better

    To be honest i couldnt say that 5 seconds is accurate given the target market, although i have read about the super-quick (and expensive) Intel SSD's and Core i7's booting this very fast indeed. It does use EXT4 by default, although i'm no expert in the differences of file storage formats. However.... the new boot sequence has a very nice almost cylon-like backwards/forwards light, that always puts a smile on my face. Am quite happy with my 40 ish second boot

    I used Amarok a bit, found the interface a bit cluttered (this was 1.4 i think) and felt more at home with Songbird as it is visually very close to iTunes, which i use in windows (brace self for onslaught!). But banshee is quite minimal and stylish, as well as quite quick, and i can sort through my 4000 ish songs really quickly. There is also a really easy album art download thing which works as it says on the tin. All in all it suits the 1024 x 600 resolution well, and also pops up with a 'now playing' whatever indicator in the same way that 9.04 did with wifi connections. And that includes the album art too - very stylish! I may yet however give Amarok 2 a try...

    Indeed, nothing works less well than in 9.04, and most works better. Even my little wifi light on the front of my Aspire One blinks when online now - not done that since Linpus Lite was on there (shudder).

    Oh and i just have to mention - if you have eg firefox running, then click the firefox icon in the top left (which shows all currently open apps) it minimises the app, and another click maximises it again - all very nice in itself, but it does so with a cool fade & minimise 3d ish effect which does nothing of any practical value, but just feels nice. Stuff like this shows attention to detail and makes it all a pleasure to use.
    I know that other OS's are doing this and have done for a while, so i'm not about bashing anything else, but it's still cool.

    FYI, we're in the process of preparing a development snapshot of Banshee 1.6 for inclusion in Karmic final.

    You don't *need* to know C to be a Linux dev, helping with packaging software is one of a distribution developers primary tasks, and the only 'language' you need to understand for that is shell and how to use configure scripts and make. Knowledge of the appropriate tools such as autotools, patch, and so forth can be useful to tackle problematic tarballs.

    I'm a "Debian Developer", which means I can upload packages to Debian (and use their resources e.g. machines with weirdo processor architectures for remote testing of ports). And an Ubuntu MOTU, which gives me equivalent rights in Ubuntu.

    Re: Ubuntu 9.10 NBR - looking v cool in Beta

    Must say I installed Banshee stable onto my Jaunty media PC and it's very nice - although it threw quite a lot of SQLite errors though due to (I think) unescaped characters when scanning my media library (not sure if that's fixed by now?)

    Now, I need to get it working with my MS remote and replace the music player in MythTV with it
    PHP Code:
    $s = new signature();
    $s->sarcasm()->intellect()->font('Courier New')->display();

    I'm similar, had 9.04 NBR since it came out and have just upgraded to 9.10 on my AAO. 9.04 NBR was great, did what I wanted but 9.10 is a futher improvement, firefox loads nearly 4x faster than before, not sure why that is, but its top notch. Give it a go with the Live CD if your not sure.
