Windows 7 Install instructions from PC World

They've been spamsending me emails with hints and tips as my pre-order comes closer to fulfilment. Here's the latest pearl of wisdom:

    1. Insert your Windows 7 DVD and restart your computer.
    2. Look for a message on the screen that asks if you want to boot from CD or DVD. When you see this on your screen press the ‘Enter’ key.
    3. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the installation. Choose the “Upgrade” option to upgrade your previous version of Windows, or “Custom Installation” to install a clean copy of Windows. We recommend you go for a fresh installation, but make sure you’ve backed up your files and have the installation CDs for your software.
Note: The upgrade option does not support Windows XP.
    4. Enter the product key found on your DVD case when prompted – this is important as it allows you to activate your copy of Windows 7.
Of course, I can pay £49.99* for them to do it for me if it sounds too complicated...

    *half price offer available!

Those instructions a bit simplistic. I know for us techies it wouldn't be a problem. but if you are Joe Normal, then what happens if you've not got it set to boot to CD as the first in the boot order? You would never see the Boot from CD option!

Quite. I'm sure the instructions that actually come with the thing will be at least as suitable as the above email, it's just PC World flogging extra services.

Re: Windows 7 Install instructions from PC World

I've actually been moderately impressed with the service I've got with my pre-order. They have sent me a number of emails as the date got nearer, reminding me that I will probably have to do a clean install, to back everything up etc etc.

I dont know, maybe it's because they are used to dealing with non techies, but it does seem to be going above and beyond the call of the normal retailer to be providing instructions and so many warnings etc. Not that I'm ever impressed with their in-store knowledge mind
