    'syncing'? my homework.

i'm struggling to try and find a way to make my flash drive sync with a certain folder on my computer, basically, what i want to happen is:
i save my school work onto the computer that i'm working on (laptop or computer) and then when i plug the flash drive in all the files on the drive are updated with the ones on the computer, and then when i plug the drive into my laptop, they're also synced onto there also. this would just save me having to copy over the folder everytime i plug it in.
surely there's a simple way to be able to do this?

    TIA

    Easiest way would be:

Create a file a called autorun.inf on the USB drive.

    type this into it:

    [AutoRun]
    open=copyover.bat

and have a file called copyover.bat:

    xcopy data c:\ /s

will copy your usb/data directory to c: on any pc. (ONE WAY though - won't move changes back to USB)

    then have the opposite script:

    copytousb.bat:

    xcopy c:\data . /s

and click copytousb.bat when your finished on that pc.

There's various ways of doing it, but it can get a bit fiddly trying to automate a two-way sync in a foolproof way which avoids unwanted replications and/or deletions on one or both PCs.

I guess it would depend how much data is involved, but have you considered Live Mesh (would save fannying around with a USB stick)... ?

Why not just open the docs from the USB stick then you don't have to spend time mincing around with replication. Alternatively use GoogleDocs.

    Re: 'syncing'? my homework.

I do things a different way, although admittedly it's still not perfect. I use my flash drive as the master, and sync to the local machines I'm on as the backup. Flash drives are sufficiently fast nowadays that this works quite well - I rarely notice that I'm working off a usb stick. And if you really need to have the file on the local machine for performance reasons, then it only takes a couple of seconds to do the sync.

You're prob not interested as you're using windows I think, but I set up two command-line aliases that use rsync. The first one is a dry run, which just tells me what files it's going to sync, and the second is the actual sync. Deletions from the usb stick are propagated to the local machine's version.

    Code:
    alias drySyncPhysics='rsync -n -h -a -v --delete /Volumes/SUPERTALENT/Physics/ /Users/rob/Physics/'
    alias syncPhysics='rsync -h -a -v --delete /Volumes/SUPERTALENT/Physics/ /Users/rob/Physics/'
I'm sure you can do more advanced two-way syncing with rsync, but I haven't really found it necessary to bother learning how yet.

Do both computer and laptop have access to the internet?

If so, Dropbox will take care of it for you. It automatically syncs folders and also makes them accessable from their website, eliminating the need for a flash drive. Excellent tool!

Download Allway Sync off their website, it's free and I used it for exactly this purpose and school and at home for a few years - it ran straight off the USB stick.

    Re: 'syncing'? my homework.

I'd love a good solution for this as well. I take my tablet laptop into lectures to take notes on in OneNote, but it means I'm one hard drive failure away from being completely screwed. I'd love to just pop in my USB drive, and it copies over the OneNote folder, updating any files previously there with the new version and copying any new files.

An online service would be cool in addition, as an extra layer of security. However OneNote files tend to be pretty large, especially if you "Print" pictures, PDFs, word documents etc into them.
