Hi All,
I got my copy of Win7 Pro today from PC world and thought I'd install it on a spare drive to see how it is. Overally, I'm fairly impressed as it seems like a much friendlier place to be than Vista was. I've gone for 64 bit as I have some synths that eat as much memory as you can throw at them, so I figured now might be a good chance to try 64 bit.
However, I've come across something very strange that I could use some help with.
I use my machine to work (I'm a self employed web developer) so it has to be rock solid and actually work (which is why I never went to vista). I've dipped my toe into Win7 just to see how it was on a spare drive I had lying around and everything seemed to be going swimmingly.
I had installed PHP, Apache and mySQL and to my surprise they all installed with no issues whatsoever. Apache was up and running (localhost worked fine) with the apache monitor in the system tray, and I had installed mySQL tools and created some shortcuts in my quick launch for the relevant apps. Happy days I thought.
However, after a restart, Apache and mySQL were not running, my icons had disappeared from quicklaunch and as far as I can tell, they never existed. There are still some files in the directories where I installed, but there are absolutely no exes in there at all. I can't find a trace of the services in the service monitor so I'm pretty stumped tbh.
So, is this UAC being a bit too militant or is it just a Win7 bug that they'll clear up after the OS has been around for a month or so? Obviously the OS has only just gone to retail which is why I'm just tinkering with it and am not relying on it for day to day work. Needless to say, my XP drive is going back in during the day as I can't afford to be fannying around with Win7 if it's going to delete essential tools on a whim.
I have ESET Smart Security Suite installed, but I've never seen it act this way in XP so that less of a suspect than Win7 itself. If I find a solution, I'll post back here![]()
