Computers randomly selecting rather than clicking

It's a bit hard to describe this problem, but bear with me - I've had this happen on two machines of exactly the same specifications over the last week, and I'm not really sure why.

Someone will be using it, and then suddenly it will go this weird kind of "selection mode". Every time they click, say in Word, rather than moving to a new position where they can continue to type, the PC selects everything from a certain position in the page to the position they've just clicked in. Exactly the same happens on the desktop - clicking on an icon doesn't select it, it just results in a whole set of icons being highlighted.

I haven't caused it myself, only seen the after-effects, so it's possible that the user has just pressed an odd button on the keyboard - problem is, I'm not sure which one it might be.

Any advice would be much appreciated

    Stuck shift key.
    Society's to blame,
    Or possibly Atari.

You've accidently turned on sticky keys? Press shift five times quickly and see what pops up.

Edit: possibly not, the PC makes lots of noise when sticky keys is on.

Ahhh, actually I think you might just be right... thing is the keyboards are brand new. Which makes more sense, in that it's a new problem, but a pain in the arse in that they're new.

I remember someone moaning about capitalisation as well, so it does make sense.

sounds like a dodgy mouse, the left click is stuck. This can happen with the cheap manufacturer mouse they throw in with new pcs.
