    Win 7 student upgrades

Has anybody done this yet? I have recieved my email to download the upgrade but a bit of further research shows that its not an ISO but an exe and a couple of big files! It therefore means that I would have to get XP back on my dell mini 9 (its running ubuntu although was purchased with XP) which will be a pain in itself, involving bootable usb sticks and all sorts of shenanegans!

So peeps, thoughts, expeiences, etc please!

Actually you can only upgrade from Vista, according the Upgrade licensing conditions. I'm looking into it now. I'm gonna be well pissed if I can't burn it to an image or something.

I can't imagine you can only upgrade from vista- that would be madness, especially as they advertised that it would allow you to upgrade from XP!

That's what it says. Anyway, I found this on the Windows 7 forums... might be helpful, it details how to make an bootable ISO for the install files. If I get it to work I will update you guys here.

It says you can clean install but doesn't say you needed the physical media version. I hope that doing the download will allow you to clean install from within XP. Otherwise I will be using one of these hacked around methods, with the added pain of using a USB stick!

Following the guide I linked is the best bet. You are using the official media, just not in the way they wanted to present it too you.

    Re: Win 7 student upgrades

I can't see why students are moaning. It's not the uni's or Microsofts fault that you get win 7 at a stupidly low price or the fact you are running an OS thatls not on the upgrade path. You should be able to upgrade from win xp sp3 or vista home premium. The student version has the exe, you run it and it plonks the upgrade install files on your HD from the copy I have tested on the uni student upgrade we have for our students. Once unpacked it will then run the update. For £32 you couldn't expect a fully installable iso.

Was this through the ultimate steal offer or did you get it from your uni? If your uni offers you to buy a licence this is where you get an installation cd.

    Re: Win 7 student upgrades

I got 64bit pro and ran the exe that came with the download and it "unboxes" the "setup1 and 2.box" files into a "expandedSetup" folder. But as it gets to the end of the "unboxing" setup2.box I get the following error:

    Unloading the Box
We are unable to create or save new files in the folder in which this application was downloaded. Please check the folder properties to make sure that you have security permission on the folder to write files and the the folder is not read-only.

I've tried the unboxing on different hard drives and still the same error. Anyone else having this problem?

edit: BTW I have set full permissions on all the files and folders and am running the exe as administrator but still the same issue.

So, from what you say, if I reinstall XP onto my mini 9 and then download the ultimate steal upgrade jobby, running it from within XP will allow me to clean install (ie upgrade as such ). If so I am happy!

Common problem. You should have a directory called expandedSetup yes? Run Setup from within there.

Right, using that guide I linked the image seems to have been created successfully. Now for the long annoying process of backing up my data, and then attempting to install Windows from the disk. I fear I may have to install Vista on C: and then upgrade from there. Time consuming, but fine, since I have a copy of Vista sitting on my desk.

Oh right I thought that the expandedSetup folder would not be full unboxded and so would not run properly? Well i'm running a 32bit Vista so i'm getting the error which says I need to check compatibility. Guess I'll create the image you suggest from that link.

The ultimate steal is the files based one, you would need to go to your uni's central computing department and ask if they can sell you windows 7. It will be an upgrade one but as you have the cd you can install as normal and it will ask for a win xp or vista key to install from. I would have to double check when I get back to work on Monday as I am down south atm.

You'll have to. Cause you need to do a custom install. Only way to do a custom install is from bootable installation media. Have you backed up all your data? Because you will lose any and all data currently residing on your C: drive.

That's annoying. Looks like I am left trying to create the iso about. The ultimate steal website was not explicit that this would arise and said that it could be used for an XP upgrade.
