Win7 and Realtek AC97 audio

FWIW

Don't know if anyone else has been experiencing a problem getting an AC97 front audio panel to work with Win7 (fully updated with Windows update). I'm using onboard audio (Realtek ALC883) and no matter what I tried (updating drivers through Windows Update, finding various Realtek Win7 drivers etc), I couldn't getting windows to recognise a headset (earphones or mic) using the front jacks (ok using rear jacks).

Sorted now though... deleted both HD audio devices through the device manager and rebooted. Windows resinstalled new drivers (god knows what) and hey presto.. when I stick the headset jacks in (ooer missus) they are now recognised.

Other than this Win7 Pro + XP mode has been a piece of cake to install! (although I don't think much of XP mode tbh....)

are you using the full windows 7 package from the realtek site?

Yep, tried them, didn't help ; Thanks for the link, but I'm not a complete nonce!

As I said, the only way I could get the front panel working, was to delete the HD Audio Devices from the device manager and reboot the system. I guess I should have mentioned that I now have a HD Audio Device drivers that are correctly driving the front panel.

Why AC97? Cos in trying to get the front panel working, I was flipping the BIOS options between AC97 and HD, without any impact on getting the front panel working with any of the drivers installed. When I finally got it working, the front panel was configured as AC97, and I don't plan on changing it to HD just for tricks and giggles.

Why would I want AC97 when I can have HD? Because I can't tell the piggin difference! All I wanted was a working front panel so I can plug a headset in without having to go to the rear plugs!!!!

It's the pin layout on your audio header - there's a difference between the HD and AC97. If you change the BIOS option to HD you need to have the HD header connected to the motherboard/soundcard.

Of course, some older cases will only have the old AC97 one, and some new cases only the newer HD one, but often they'll have both.

Yep, and mine is AC97 only.
