    Home Studio software

    HI All,

I'm planning on starting recording again soon (since I've just put some cash aside for some digital drums ) and was wondering if anyone had any experience with multitrack recording software.

Ideally I'd like something that would allow me to sequence / compose midi tracks, then multitrack up to, say, 8 live audio tracks on top of them (guitar, bass, drums, a couple of vocal tracks and possibly some live woodwind). The only software I've ever had for this was something I picked up dirt cheap many years ago (from memory it was called something like Magix Studio Generation MM, or something).

Anyone know of anything suitable for a modest outlay, and anyone got any experience / recommendations they could share?

    Re: Home Studio software

Bundled with many cheaper 'pro' controllers, soundcards etc. you'll usually find bundled software sequencers, cut down versions of the full products, you'll find these will do everything you need, e.g. MIDI sequencing and live recording.

If you haven't got any recording or interface equipment yet, you may want to consider one with bundled software.
My X-Fi Elite Pro and E-MU 0202 came with Cubase LE, but that was a few years ago, Cubase LE has been replaced with Cubase Essential I think.
Where as, my M-Audio Keystation 61ES and Audiophile 2496 came with Ableton Live Lite.

Both Ableton Live Lite and Cubase LE will do what you want, between the two I prefer Cubase which I find easier to use.

If you've got your own kit already, I can point you to my personal favorite 'full' sequencers:

    Logic Studio (Mac only)
    Steinberg Cubase
    Cakewalk Sonar

The above are pretty dear for a home studio, the cut down versions are considerably cheaper and do pretty much everything you need:

    Logic Express (Mac only)
    Steinberg Cubase Essential
    Sonar Home Studio

I have to stress, these are my personal preferences so are not necessarily the best choices, I've been trained on Logic (back in the day when it used to be on Windows too), Cubase and Sonar have similar interfaces and aren't that hard to get around as a novice. I haven't played with Ableton Live much so I can't comment on that.

I think there are demo versions you can have a go on, the Apple store usually has Logic installed on one of their machines. Try these softwares out, it's all down to personal preference in my opinion.

I'd also give Cockos Reaper a go before making your decision, there's an unlimited shareware version you can download to give it a try and the licencing is comparatively very cheap if you decide you like it.
