Win XP Home - Restart Issue

After 9 months of faultless useage a XP home system now reboots just as it gets to the GUI. Things I've tried so far.

    VGA Mode
    Safe Mode
    Last Known Good
Recovery Console - only did a chkdsk here.

Booted with a slipstreamed SP3 XP CD and tried to do a repair. After pressing F8 at the licence screen I don't get the option to repair.

I've installed another version of XP to another folder and that installed and runs with no issues. I've installed NOD to that and done an in-depth scan plus Ive run the various anti-spyware tools such as SuperAnti and Spybot.

    Any other suggestions please ?

    Thanks in advance.

Sounds as if your original windows installation is so borked that it can't be repaired, but you have managed to re-install and it now works ?

    Or possibly Atari.

Identical results - PC restarts just as you'd expect the GUI to appear.

New installation to c:\new folder and that works fine......and yes it looks as though its borked. Trying to find root cause and see if I can save it.

Well I guess so it could be prevented from happening again. As I said 9 months since it was built and no problems whatsoever.

Yes, I could just backup the data now and rebuild but what if it happens again in another 9 months ?

Re: Win XP Home - Restart Issue

Fair enough. Could be bad sectors on the HDD.
If Chkdsk was clear I'd have a look at HDtune. How old is the PSU ? have you changed anything else in the system ?

Re: Win XP Home - Restart Issue

Chkdsk run from within the recovery console and within the other install of Windows - no errors.

Will run the HD diags from a CD tho tonight.

PC was built from new in Jan, nothing changed in their setup.

I thought the answer was quite obvious... Windows XP.

Random, unsolvable, voodoo death is to be expected.

Re: Win XP Home - Restart Issue

Modify the setupp.ini on the CD to a value that gives you all the options you need, the CD you're using musn't be matched to the install e.g. retail/oem/pro/home etc.

Failing that, if you can get access to ERD commander (there used to be a free 30 day trial version from MS somewhere) there's a system file repair option on that.

Or... boot to your xp cd again, open recovery console and run a system file repair from command line - sfc /scannow

You say you've slipstreamed your disc - try the original and look for repair option, yeah it'll replace all the files with pre-sp3 versions, but it'll get it running, although you're probably going to end up wiping it anyway eventually.

None of above possible, see about a BartPE bootdisc.

Sorry - is that must or must not ?

I take a look for that

Yes - I can try that

Ok, it was installed using a XP Home OEM SP2 CD at the beginning of this year

None of above possible, see about a BartPE bootdisc.
    Check

    Thanks!

Re: Win XP Home - Restart Issue

    Did the ERD thing

2 installs listed. the new install allows you to start stuff but the knackered one says unsupported OS.

Trying the recovery console sfc option now........

SFC doesn't work from the recovery console

Don't think there are a lot of options left now.........thanks for everyones help tho
