Interesting results coming through on the poll

We're currently asking on the front page if people are more exited by Windows 7 launch, Ubuntu 9.10 launch of the recent-ish launch of Snow Leopard. It's 54% W7 v 41% Ubuntu right now - remarkable I think.

I imagine that a little over three years ago (what were we then, Breezy Badger?) when Vista came out, the story would have been very different.

Anyway, get on the front page and vote if you haven't already done so!

Re: Interesting results coming through on the poll

tbh, I'm not particularly "excited" about any of them. I've been using Windows 7 for almost a year on and off, so I'm pleased it's finally publically available in a release build, but it's hardly exciting any more, and there always seem to be so many Linux releases across different distros and versions that I find it completely impossible to get excited about a "new" linux release. Oh, and Snow Leopard didn't even get a raised eyebrow from me.

Any chance of modifying the poll to allow a "Not really bothered" option?

Well I've voted for Windows 7 but you'll have to bare in mind that my actual level of excitement breaks down something like this:

    Snow Leopard - Totally disinterested
Karmic Koala - Only very slightly interested
Windows 7 - Fairly interested but not so far as to be excited

Nowhere near enough votes to establish a statistical norm., I think. But it's definitely interesting that enthusiasts are taking Linux more seriously these days.

Re: Interesting results coming through on the poll

I can;t say I'm geeky/nerdy enough for an O/S release to excite me all that much. However I've also voted for Win7 as windows is my main O/S of choice as a gamer & as a CAD consultant. I like Ubuntu & what they're doing with Linux, but it's not particularly radical stuff (not that I'm saying Win7 is either). However, as has been said, nice to see Linux pulling a good portion of the vote thus far, albeit unsurprising on a tech forum like Hexus.

Re: Interesting results coming through on the poll

I can understand Windows generating excitement given the marketing effort and hype, especially afterthe perceived flop of Vista.

Ubuntu too has a good following and while I'm delighted that it is being promted, other distros also have a rgular update cycle - particularly Fedora (my favourite) but these are more incremental improvements rather than "Big bang". As for the snow leopard release, Apple haven't really oushed that - they see themselves more as hardware sellers - so while enthusiasts might get excited - and developers with specific Mac applications, I'm not particularly surprised by the relative lack of interest.

It would be intetresting to correlate the excitement level with the user base, but perhaps Ubuntu users are a more vocal group than Windows users?

Yeah is kind of surprising so far. Wouldnt say excited but personally for me happy with Windows 7 for the games, and Ubuntu for everything else

Re: Interesting results coming through on the poll

    im really enjoying windows 7.

Ive tryed ubuntu 9.10 beta and it does seem good but what the hell is with the really dark login screen?

tbh I prefer vanilla debian but lenny doesnt detect my wireless card. debian isnt actually that hard these days. i did need to print out the instuctions for nvidia drivers for my desktop because I had to use tty's a bit.
I may try debian testing squeeze.
    Im liking fedora 12 beta.

btw anyone who is currently using ubuntu have you tryed other distros?
if so which ones and why did you end up with ubuntu?

Re: Interesting results coming through on the poll

I haven't settled with any distro atm. But I'd most likely settle for Ubuntu, mostly because of package range and the fact that they're not foss prudes.

    I've used:

    * Mandrake 7 (!) briefly.
    * Gentoo circa 2004 again, briefly.
    * ClarkConnect (router/firewall, Redhat based IIRC) for two years.
    * CentOS briefly a few years ago
    * Dabbled in Debian a bit
    * Ubuntu since 8.04

ClarkConnect was the first install that lastest more than 30 days and it says something that it wasn't a desktop distribution. It wasn't until Ubuntu 8.04 that I felt I had something I could use permanently on my desktop machine. This is in part progress, and in part growth of my Linux skill set - I dare say now I would be quite happy with Debian or even Slackware. But I'm not using those, I'm using Ubuntu

I should also point out that I administer FreeBSD servers (intravenously)

Windows 7 - I've been blown away since the Beta came out. Running the RTM is even sweeter.
Ubuntu 9.10 - I wasn't even aware that it was up this high. Still using the same dull brown theme and Gnome desktop environment? Nah...
Snow Leopard - AFAIK it didn't even change from Leopard that has been out for years. I wasn't impressed with Leopard from the MacBook I got to toy with at my last job.

Have to remember you don't need to use gnome or keep the "dull" default theme it comes with, have to say my current Linux theme i have setup is allot more pleasing to the eye than my Windows 7

Haven't heard anything from SuSe lately. Anyone know if they're still around, what they're up to ?
    Society's to blame,
    Or possibly Atari.
