Win 7 and Office 2000: Not Responding

    Lo people

my old man has Office 2000 Pro that he brought years ago on his business account and he and my mum run it on their pc and lappy.

Ma's lappy is dead, she has a new one from Dell with Win 7 and Office 2000 Word keeps chucking a "Not responding" error.

I checked MS web site and it's not been answered yet.

    http://www.microsoft.com/communities...r=US&sloc=&p=1

Anyone got any cunning ideas? Cheers guys.

Re: Win 7 and Office 2000: Not Responding

Office 2K is ancient software matey - and the way MS write their apps, very likely to have been designed to run on Win98. A bit of a stretch in 2009. Sorry.

Remembering that this requires 7 Pro, Enterprise, or Ultimate - but that might not be a bad deal given the alternatives.

The options for legally proceeding are:

    1) buy Office 2k7 (starting price £80)
    2) buy a Windows Anytime Upgrade to get from (what I presume is) Home Premium to Pro (starting price £120) and use XP Mode
    3) buy a RETAIL license for XP (pretty rare nowadays, starting price is over £100, but good luck finding it), and run it via a Free virtual desktop app like VMWare Server or Virtualbox or Virtual PC.

    4) codeweavers.com/compatibility/browse/name/?app_id=1 costs £26 and comes with tech support, but I'll get a spanking for suggesting it, so this is in white-on-white where you won't see it. Shhhhhhhhhhhh!

Those are your options. Assuming you can't magick it to life some other way, but I reckon you'll be lucky - even XP didn't exist when Office 2000 was released

I know it's old, but it works fine on XP Pro and the old man loves Publisher too.

Office2003 or later with Vista OR Windows 7 I'm pretty sure.

You can pick up a Home and Student copy of Office2007 from Ebuyer or Dabs for around £55 or it was until recently. You get Word, Excel, Powerpoint and OneNote.

It may have worked fine on XP, but that is now 2 OS's ago . . . .

To put it another way, how much mainstream support/part availability would there be for a 9 year old car?

Have you installed the latest service releases/patches etc. for Office 2000, and tried the usual tricks like running in compatibility mode, disabling desktop composition etc. ?

I find Open office quite similar to Office 2000....

I would say this is the time for open office, it is after all about 9 years behind MS Office in usability!

longer than that Trig... but lets be frank...

Office 2000 Pro works fine on Vista 64 Ultimate, and 32 Home. So it's not that far removed from reality to hope that word might work on Windows 7. The other parts do (excel etc)

Re: Win 7 and Office 2000: Not Responding

If it works fine in Vista then I would of expected it to work under 7 as well, but, being frank if your buying a new machine with w7 on it then would you expect somethings not to work?
My old man just bought a new machine and I stuck w7 on it, then I had to bin it and put XP back on because his agency software wouldnt work under 7 but would under Vista, but me being me I decided I'd get less ear ache if he was on XP over Vista...

According to MS, the following versions of Office are supported under Vista :-

    See this

I would have expected that if it was properly supported under Vista, it would probably work under Win 7 .... but expectations can be wrong.

Zak, I feel your frustration. I still use Office 2000 too. Why? Because I've got it, it's legit, and it does everything I need. So why pay out for an upgrade?

When I get a chance, I'll try in on my W7 machine but right now, I haven't.

One thing to point out though, in case you weren't aware of it. MS have now (about 3 months ago) ceased all support for Office 2000. No more updates, not even security patches. So, if it won't work under W7, then nothing MS does it likely to even look at the problem much less find a solution.

Were it my Dad, I'd suggest his options are :-

    - downgrade the OS. Go back to Vista, or perhaps better yet, XP. Then install Office 2000. But, no support if he does that.

    - Upgrade Office to Office 2007 (those Home and Student deals are pretty good).

With the latter, he can then either try to install Publisher only, or try to acquire a later stand-alone version of Publisher .... or bite the bullet and find an alternative. I never really used Publisher very much because I used PageMaker a lot. I might have a standalone (boxed) copy of Publisher laying around. If I have (and can find it) he's welcome to it if it helps? But I would have thought there were some strong competitors to Publisher these days.
