    Re: Defragging in Vista

No, you can't - it's just not there in the built in defragger.

Everybody has their fave defragger but really it's personal preference given they all plugin to the same Window's API to do their job

defraggler is decent for a free app. For a paid one its all down to personal preference. I was using Ultimate Defrag but with countless x64 bugs I dumped it for defraggler.

I've used and been pleased with Auslogics Disk Defrag, which is free. I also tried out and was impressed by PerfectDisk, but that isn't free, although a free trial is available.

I agree chap, infact, if you walk off and come back later, you still don't know if it finished or if it's done, cos the same message shows up again.

I'm a Defraggler user also. I did use PowerDefrag or whatever it was but dumped it. Would like something to defrag my pagefile though. Keeps coming up on Defraggler which can't defrag it.

    Re: Defragging in Vista

you could try jkdefrag or jkdefrag gui. jkdefrag gui is just a gui frontend for jkedefrag with all the commandline functions avalible within a gui.
    @marclister,
just delete your pagefile and create one at a fixed size so it doesnt fragment.
if you want to know how just tell me your OS and ill help you when i get back.

    Hey,
that means it will adjust it if needed hence it will fragment.
if you delete it and create a fixed page file it will never fragment.

    Re: Defragging in Vista

The vista defragger has no progress bar, however it is the most efficient defragger out there, i would stick with it imo.

That is also what I have concluded.

However Vista says it should be 6141Mb big. I can't help but think that if Vista is "managing" the page file the current size and recommended size should be the same?

The "recommended" size is a hangover from the days when a pagefile was supposed to be at least 1.5 times the size of physical installed RAM. It might have been good advice when PCs were running Win2K on 128MB of RAM, but it's a bit of a nonsense these days.

You're really best off just letting Vista handle virtual memory as it sees fit - you could set a fixed size if you like, but I doubt if you'd notice much if any difference in practice.

    Re: Defragging in Vista

I use PerfeckDisk for defragging - very good programme and is much better than most.
I have 6gb of memory, so I limited my page file so that it wouldn't slow down my pc too much. I used to have it off with 8gb memory (Socket 775 - > 1366 upgrade)
