    Question Windows 7 permissions oddities?

    Hi folks,

I've been using Win 7 Pro since it came out but seem to have random permissions issues.

My user is running as an Administrator but I keep getting odd errors saying I don't have permission to do some things:

    1. This is the main one, saving in FF I randomly get errors saying I have no permission to save to a network share or something similar yet I'm saving locally. If I save it again it asks to overwrite the file and it saves?

    2. Sometimes programs (iTunes last night) say they don't have permission to save a file even though they were installed as the user they're running as?

Just wondering if anyone had any thoughts?

    Cheers
    Paul.

    1. Probably because the remote machine doesn't have an account with the same credentials as your local machine. Having local administrator group rights doesn't automatically give you permission to do things on remote machines. For example, my remote samba machine only has samba accounts for users, not root/Administrator, so if I use UAC or *the* Administrator account to write a file somewhere the request will be rejected.
    2. Crap software which doesn't know how to handle UAC.

Both I and a colleague get the 1st issue at work. Doesn't happen at home though. Sorry, can't offer a solution, only to say that you're far from the only one with that issue.

The same applies for old partitions and drives with maligned ACLs.

To sort this would I just select the relevant files/directories and change the owner to me?

I put my old secondary drive in which is possibly what is causing the problem as various stuff was assigned to an unknown user.

    Cheers

    Yeah, that should do it.

    Re: Windows 7 permissions oddities?

OK, a reason. Apparently it's NOD32, and it generally effects 'fast' computers. There's a post here from a NOD32 guy.
Good news guys, it seems we have pinpointed the issue. Could you confirm that the problem occurs when saving files to the desktop or to a folder visible on the desktop in an Explorer window? Most likely it affects only high performance systems when the OS detects creation of a new file but doesn't wait until it's fully created and attempts to gather information about the file even though it has zero size. This event is subsequently detected by real-time protection driver which locks the file temporarily. We have a workaround for this unusual OS behavior ready and I'll provide it to some of you who have contacted me so far. Once we confirm that the new driver fixes the issue, we'll make newer installers that will be put on the download page after they pass the pre-release QA testing.
Sounds like that's the cause. Now awaiting the fix.

In the meantime, removing the 'create' protection (still allowing open and execute) seems to have fixed it for me. Far from ideal of course. Perhaps just live with it if you dabble in using questionable sources for acquiring things.

Cheers for that Will do the same and see what happens. I use ESS so I guess it's got the same issue.

    Re: Windows 7 permissions oddities?

I would have thought it would have affected everyone with nod installed.

    Windows 7 Professional x64 and nod32 v4 64bit (4.0.437.0)

FF 3.5.5 and i have tried it with both save to downloads folder and ask me where to save it.

my laptop is part of an sbs 2008 domain.

The only time i have seen permission issues seperate to this is if you run an install that doesnt need you to "run as administrator" i.e its uac friendly, then when trying to use the software, it always needs to be run with elavated permissions, because thats how it was installed.

How do you have your save options in FF set? also was this is fresh install of 7 or an upgrade?

    Re: Windows 7 permissions oddities?

Not necessarily, odd issues arise on similar systems all the time in software.

It's a clean install and FF is set to ask every time it wants to save. I'm inclined to think that is the issue as I hit save the first time, get the error, hit save again to which it asks if i want to overwrite the existing file which I do, then it will save. It's the inital save error that happens randomly.

For the record, according to that thread 4.0.437 is a lot less susceptible to this bug.
