    Laptop bug

Apart from my daughters PC which is playing up now I find my laptop has some infection. When I boot up I get the first screen saying System Configuration Data Read Error F1 to resume F2 to setup

Upon typing F1 it starts to boot I get to the desktop screen which then leaves the icons on but goes to a black background, replacing the original picture.I then get a screen pop up saying Security Tool system scan list umpteem infections.
Given choice of remove threats, it then wants money to do it, or carry on unprotected.
If I click the latter it then says in a little window at the bottom right that whatever I try to access

XXXXX.exe is infected with worm Lsas.Blaster.Keyloger

I cannot run AVG as it then says avgui.exe is ......................... Lsas. Blaster. Keyloger

Everything I try to run gives the same sort of error.

If I click the Windows security shield I get a blue screen, listing infections and back to the scenario of paying for removal, instead of the usual screen listing firewall etc etc.

How can I run a diagnostic on it if I cannot get one to load?

    Thanks

By wiping the HDD and reinstalling Windows. Back up any documents first, of course.

Honestly, people frequently think it's possible to 'repair' Windows when it gets train-wrecked, but you've actually got a better chance of getting a train-wreck back on the rails.

    Re: Laptop bug

You're never going to make any progress booting into the OS and trying to fix it from there.

Running checks from a bootable CD like UBCD4Win would make far more sense, but as aidanjt said you'd be much better off just wiping.

Maybe run UBCD4Win and copy any files you need over to an external drive and then wipe it. Just don't, whatever you do, use the external drive in your current Windows install, or copy any infected files over (if possible).

    Re: Laptop bug

Reinstall windows, yes it is an arse.

But you will never know if you have fully removed the infection, which could cause you grief in the future (i.e. credit card details stolen, identity theft etc)

    Reinstall and be safe

    Re: Laptop bug

If I ever suspected one of my Linux machines was rooted, I'd nuke the boot/system partitions and reinstall as well. It's just one of those things which you can never be completely sure about even if you could 'repair' the system.

That's my rule. Infection means reinstall. No exceptions.

    Re: Laptop bug

Thanks guys. Have reloaded operating system and am now in process of putting data back on. Not sure where I got this bug from as hadn't been on any, as I thought, dodgy sites.
Anyway alls well now. Gave me an excuse to buy an external HDD

    Re: Laptop bug

Surely running a good anti virus would clean it up? I've cleaned many an infection up with nod32 and malwarebytes.

    Re: Laptop bug

Of course it won't, that's a pretty ridiculous suggestion to be honest. He's already pointed out that he's tried to use anti-virus and it's been thwarted - or did you not read what he said?

    Re: Laptop bug

btw there is one way to stop the infection when the system is running. download processexplorer rename it to explorer.exe and run it. then you close the processes related to the malware which is genraally quite obvious. then just run lots of scans. my favs apps to run are superantispyware and MBAM.
I agree that a format is the best way thou.

ive seen to much bypass avg so i cant reccomend it.
for free i reccomend Avast and for paid i reccomend eiether kaspersky or f-secure.
