Windows 7 64bit, any one used it?

Hi i am thinking of upgrading to windows 7, i have tried XP and Vista 64 but i found them to be a real pain in the bum, issues with unsigned drivers if i remember correctly.

shall i just stick with Windows 7 Home Premium x32? or is it worth going to x64? PC is used as a Media Center currently on XP 32.

Re: Windows 7 64bit, any one used it?

I have installed both on various systems, and they run beautifully. I have had no problems with any hardware on the new OS. Given the years of Vista, this is hardly surprising. Question would be how much memory do you have ? If you have a relatively modern system I would go 64 simp0ly for the ability for the RAM. It's the same price after all.
    Society's to blame,
    Or possibly Atari.

There are plenty of threads already on this topic, but in short - yes, go for 64bit W7 unless you have some really old hardware you can live without and you are sure won't work with it.

Thanks very much, windows vista and XP 64 were a joke. completely unusable on a daily basis.

I have a modest system for my media center. it is a Gigabyte G31 board with a very small 2 gig of ram. A E8400 dual core and an 8800 GTS graphics card so it is relatively good for a media center but not amazing in terms of what is on the market these days.

I think i will give it a go.

XP 64bit was a bit pointless. I disagree about vista though, I used it for over a year on my main desktop and it's still on my laptop. Not had any issues with it really.

Moved to Windows 7 on the desktop for a change and to clear out all the rubbish that accumulates over the course of a year of use.

Yeah I've run Windows 7 64bit and it's mostly trouble-free. You're not really getting a lot of benefits yet but as the 64bit versions of applications start to take over from the 32bit ones you'll see improved speed and RAM usage. Photoshop 64bit is supposed to be pretty good I hear.

I run XP64 - which admittedly had a faw teething issues with a few drivers but soon sorted and Vista64, daily at home (2 systems and dual boot) with which I have no issues at all, in fact Vista64 has been pretty good for me at least.

I also have a copy of Win 7 64Pro to go on my new build so I'm not playing the luddite here, but to make that statement is a little misguiding IMO.

Re: Windows 7 64bit, any one used it?

I run Vista64 and have done from day one. I find it fast and solid as a rock. I have just updated my laptop to Win7 x64 after having Vista 32bit and Linux Mint on and find 7 very nice to use. It's Vista refined.

I love Linux Mint and intended to dual boot the laptop but 7 is so good I have not bothered.

64 bit drivers existing for everything but the oldest stuff now. Definately go 64 if you are installing a new system.

Use 64-bit, or you don't have 4 gig of RAM, you have 3.2

    End of story.

I've had no issues with my Win7 64bit. All the components of my machine (3years old) all have 64bit drivers out for them.

No problems with Win7Pro 64 bit, and the missus hasn't complained at all when I upgraded her laptop from Vista 64bit to Win7 Premium 64 bit.
