Moving to Windows 7 - eMail Advice Needed?

    Hi,

I'm about to migrate my family's 4 computers from WIndows XP to Windows 7.

Currently, we use Outlook Express as our mail client. We also have Outlook 2003 but have never bothered with it because OE suits our needs.

I understand that OE no longer exits and has been replaced by Windows Mail in Win7, but I've never seen this so have no idea what it is like.

So given a choice of Windows Mail or Outlook 2003, which would you go for.

Also I would want to migrate my existing emails, folders and contacts from OE to my new client.

I know that when I install Outlook 2003 it attempts to import these automatically.

I've also read that you can migrate from OE to Windows Mail but it is more convoluted.

So which would you recommend for both functionality and ease of migration.

    Cheers,

    Nigel

OE to Windows mail is the way to go.
To transfer over, export your accounts from OE, goto tools/accounts,export and save the file.

To move messages over look for your email folder, should be located c:\documents and settings\username\local settings\application data\microsoft\identities\outlook express, save this folder.

Address book is located c:\documents and settings\username\application data\microsoft\address book\username.wab. Save this file

All these files can then be imported back into live mail

    Why windows 7?
If you've got machines and there all doing what you want, why go through the setup and getting used to hastles just to change OS?
Dont get me wrong, I actually really like w7 but unless your getting new machines or seriously upgrading them then the transition from XP to w7 might not be what your expecting..

Live mail is fine, I wouldn't bother with outlook personally. LM does everything you need and integrates with hotmail, gmail etc lovely.

Re: Moving to Windows 7 - eMail Advice Needed?

Many thanks for your help - I'm going to giveWindows Mail a try.

    Why windows 7?
Really because we are having a big hardware change. My wife and daughter are getting laptops which will have Win7 on them anyway.

I am upgrading my machine (new Mobo, CPU, GFX) and am handing done my current components to my son.

So I would have been faced with a reinstall of Windows XP anyway and I was attracted by the the low pre-order price of Win7.

Also it means that the family will all be on the same OS.

    Cheers,

    Nigel

    Good planning.

Personally I moved over to Internet based email a long time ago to save headaches like this. That way no need to export or move stuff over. That said if you use GoogleMail you can then setup Windows Mail to download from it.

Re: Moving to Windows 7 - eMail Advice Needed?

The other alternative, of course, is Thunderbird - I use it at work to manage several imap email accounts and it works very nicely indeed. I'm not trying to claim it's any better than OE (although IMNSHO it handles imap better than OE) and I've not used Live Mail yet so really can't comment on that, but if all you're after is an email client then it might be worth at least having a play with it.

Certainly don't go for Outlook if you're happy with OE: Outlook only really comes into its own when connecting to an Exchange server to give you access to calendar / shared folders / shared tasks etc. As a stand-alone email client it's not up to much - the only time I tried Outlook as an email client I actually switched back to OE within a couple of months

Thats ok then, I was thinking from your original post that you were mearly changing OS on existing hardware which isn't always a good idea..

Windows Mail is pretty good and will do you well.

Re: Moving to Windows 7 - eMail Advice Needed?

Seeing your responses has prompted another question.

    Is Windows Mail web-based?

If so I'm less inclined to use it, especially on the laptops.

I want something where email is accessible even if the computer is offline (previous eMails obviously, not new ones).

    Cheers,

    Nigel

Nope its not web based, it installs as part of the "Live" application set.
