How this is at all worth paying for? Reminds me of the many garbage "cleaning" apps that cost money.
USB devices are plug and play. There isn't any need for an application to do it.

you could write that yourself in no time.

What if I ask you "is snowmobile worth paying for?"
It depends on you and your needs, no one else knows your needs. If you live in Africa snowmobile will be absolutely worthless, if you live in Alaska or Siberia I think it must have. Isn't it?
This program has tonns of features over native safe removal tool, see the full list here: safelyremove.com/fullFeaturesList.htm, e.g. it displays what programs prevent your device from being stopped, has enhanced autorun capability on device connection and before disconnection, can activate stopped but not disconnected device back, hides empty drives of card readers from your system and many more. But all these things is required only for a frequent "hot-plug" device user - a user who often use external-drives (card readers, flash drives and etc) or have several of them.
If you have only one flash drive and disconnect it once a month, then the program is likely worthless for you, but if you have several external devices and swap them every day this program may save your time and it might be useful for you.
P.S.
"To use safe removal or not to use it"... There are many discussions on the net about this. Some people recommend to use it and some not recommend... unless they lost their data because of unsafe removal, e.g. see this article: http://reviews.cnet.com/4520-10166_7-6444662-1.html

Using the snowmobile comparison isn't exactly applicable here. Hot swapping of USB devices is built into Windows from the start. You probably have a better chance of getting hit by lightning than ever corrupting a USB flash drive by simply yanking it out.
Most people won't even see those multiple drives from unused slots on a card reader because once they insert the card, Windows auto-play will pop up with the option to open it.
That CNET link is a good read but doesn't really apply to modern computers with any newer Windows OS. Format the flash drive with NTFS and in the device properties set it so that write caching is disabled. No worry about corruption from there on.
I've just had a look at the site that 12gaugeshotty kindly linked to.
Some of the program features aren't readily available in windows - the ability to remount USB devices without physically removing and re-plugging, and identification of the process that prevents the device from being removed. True, if you disable caching that may not be a problem, but it is a nice to have.
It also appears to bring together several functions which, although already available, into one place.
Is it worth just under £20? (about £18 at current exchange rates) Hard to say, but since there is a trial version, it can be downloaded to make up your own mind.
(Be useful if it dispalayedf the PID and VID of a device - although that is available elsewhere in windows)

I do like the feature that shows you what program is accessing the drive and is preventing safe removal.
there is other nice features to but i cant remember what atm.
