    VM Ware Internet Connection

Hi, guys first time on the forums! I am currently running Ubuntu on my computer and running Windows XP on Vmware. I'm wondering how to access the internet in Windows XP in Vmware. As a heads up, I'm not very technical, so if you wouldn't mind, please simplify your answers.

    Thanks a lot!

if you have a DHCP server then your VM should be set to obtain its address via DHCP abd it should work.

Which VMWare product is this? Are you talking about VMWare Server? If so... have you had a look at this?

(just building an Ubuntu VM to see if I can replicate your issue)

EDIT - ignore that link, seems to be irrelevant after all

Ok, just stepping through the process now. If you are indeed using VMWare Server 2 the default network connection type seems to be "Host Only" (this is with a default install of the server). This needs to be either NAT or Bridged (dependent on what kind of connectivity you need) in order to piggyback off the host machine's NIC for internet access.

I've not built the XP VM yet, running through that now however you should be able to change the network type when the VM is powered down.

EDIT - ok, I can't build the VM as I'm running VMWare Server on a virtualised Ubuntu box, and it won't allow me to run a VM inside a VM, which I suppose makes sense. That said, i'm pretty certain that my diagnosis is correct - let me know how you get on.

    Re: VM Ware Internet Connection

As pointed by Splash you need to use either NAT or Bridged mode. Using the latter and you get a different IP address for your XP VM (you will see 2 devices attached to your ADSL/Cable router)

Let's us know if we can help

    cheers

Thanks for all the replies guys! Ok, just for clarification, I am using Vmware Player and a CD for windows XP. Is all I have to do change the settings on my virtual machine in the virtual adapter section to NAT?

Edit: I did that and it worked!!!! Thanks a lot for all your help guys! Splash, Jay and pardal!

Avoid Vmware's NAT like a dose of syphilis. It doesnt work, and is prone to crashing.

Just use bridged providing you are not on wireless, and it'll be fine.

I would tend to agree with Abaxas here. Using bridged gives me much better performance and stability. I regularly suspend the VM and in nat mode, it got confused. With bridged, it works like a treat.

On a side note, I use VirtualBox with guests using NAT and never had any problems. VirtualBox is also available for Linux distros.
