Angry Argh. Canon doesn't provide 64bit WIA support for scanners

My old trusty Canoscan LIDE 50 scanner has been brilliant, it still works today.

After a fair bit of digging, despite Canon not offering direct 64bit support for the LIDE 50 scanner, I found a "hacked LIDE 50 / 60 hybrid driver which apparently works. Scanner is detected in W7 as a fully working Canoscan LIDE 50 scanner

Next problem, and a final fatal blow : W7 is now using the WIA architecture, replacing TWAIN. And as a result, this needs WIA driver support and not TWAIN. And Canon have confirmed they won't provide 64bit WIA support for their scanners.

So whilst a hack could have had the scanner running on 64bit 2k / Vista via TWAIN, if you have Windows 7, you're screwed because of the new WIA-only support

It looks like I now have to get a new scanner. Well, it won't be a Canon In reality, I might just have to use my work lappy instead as that still has good old 32bit Win XP which works

Actually, I may have been a bit hasty with my rant. Re-reading that technet article doesn't make sense to me, or rather the combination of that and the fact Canon have released 64 bit drivers for W7 (admittedly for the LIDE 60 and not the LIDE 50). Surely they should work ?

Canon suck for drivers. Unfortunate, given their hardware is nice.

Yeah, but Canon's driver link http://software.canon-europe.com/sof...680.asp?model= clearly states
    Operating system(s): Windows 7 64bit, Windows Vista 64bit
Having said that, the release date of 06-11-2007 makes it a bit suspicious to be W7 tried-and-tested LOL

Not necessarily - my old-but-perfectly-functional Lide 20 doesn't have 64-bit support, even though the Lide 25 apparently does (the 64-bit Lide 25 drivers won't work with the Lide 20).

I worked around it by installing the 32-bit drivers in Windows 7 Pro's XP mode virtual machine and enabling USB passthrough - if you have Home Premium (hence no XP mode), you could use the free VMware Player to create a small Linux virtual machine instead (any recent kernel should support your scanner).

If you set up a network shared folder on the host OS filesytem as a default save location for your scans, it's reasonably convenient and quite a practical working solution - at least, it's better than throwing away a perfectly serviceable scanner simply because its cynical manufacturer would rather you bought a new one.

Yeah, Captain, I had wondered about that.
But having HP and not Pro, don't have the XP mode. But is the XP mode in Pro just MS Virtual PC with an XP licence? I could just download it manually and use my old XP licence I guess? Going off topic... Sorry.

Oh FFS, MS have blocked VirtualPC 2007 from running. Off to get VirtualBox now

Yes you can, but use the latest Virtual PC for Win 7, not the older Virtual PC 2007. AFAIK the EULA permits useage with any version of Win7, but it seems a bit difficult to find as a standalone download.

You can get it here - when it asks you which version of Win7 you're running, lie and say Professional, which will enable you to download the KB958559 Virtual PC package (you won't need the XP Mode VM itself).

If you wanted to save your XP licence, you could just use XSane in a Linux VMware virtual machine as I suggested - I've tried it and it works perfectly, with my scanner at least.

lol.. sorry, I was a bit slow replying.

Good luck with VirtualBox, I've never been able to get its USB passthrough working reliably (which is the reason I suggested VMware Player)...

OK, that'll explain why it crashes as soon as I try to add any usb filters

Re: Argh. Canon doesn't provide 64bit WIA support for scanners

I had tried the W7 virtual PC before virtual box but completely missed the menu bar at the top with the options for creating a new VM. I just saw a normal empty explorer window and thought it only worked with the xp mode licence thingy MS let you download when you have the Pro version...

Installing an OS on a VM now, but don't see any USB options :s

Re: Argh. Canon doesn't provide 64bit WIA support for scanners

I was in the same boat with my Epson scanner not having drivers released for Vista (and obviously Win7). I discovered a scanning program called VueScan (http://www.hamrick.com) and it is brilliant. If there are not drivers for your scanner it loads it's own drivers and I can use my Epson 1200 scanner perfectly in Win 7 64bit (and 64bit Vista.)

I bought the pro version (about $80/£50 but there is a cheaper version as well)

    Supported scanners: http://www.hamrick.com/vuescan/vuescan.htm#supported

Re: Argh. Canon doesn't provide 64bit WIA support for scanners

I've tried VueScan before, but I didn't like the interface much, and it cost more than my scanner anyway (I don't remember a $39.95 version being available at the time).

To be honest it would really rattle my cage having to spend *anything* on a third party program, simply because a hardware manufacturer is too lazy/greedy to provide decent support for their products.

I've done that in the past for Canon drivers for Linux (turboprint)

    Nowadays I have an HP

While I agree with the general point, I would point out that some third-party paid-for software is head and shoulders above the "free" stuff manufacturers supply. I would include VueScan in that category. Scanners are often limited by the software driving them, both in features and image quality. VueScan is, IMHO, a classy piece of software.
