    Question Buying win7 student offer.

Ok I've paid my £30 and I am now getting a download page. I'm on xp and I won't be installing on this machine anyway so I will need to download the .iso file. Any information on what to do with the file when I have downloaded it? Just burn to DVD and use when needed?

    Thanks, Nick.

I downloaded the .iso file not the .exe so I reckon it is iso but is there any freeware in particular that's any good?

Download the ISO Image of Windows 7

Please obtain these links by contacting Digital River customer support. The Windows 7 ISO file is large (>2GB). Please verify that you have sufficient hard disk space to download this file and install Windows 7. Approx. 20GB will be enough for both operations.

ISO download has been available for quite a while now.

May want to check out imgburn or cdburnerxp. Both are highly regarded burning tools.
The win7 student offer is for single machine use

Thanks. How can they restrict that? By the product key and an internet connection?

Yeah, once you've activated it Still, you can transfer it to another machine. i.e. Upgrading to a new system or pc component.

The Windows 7 student offer gives you an RTM version of Win 7 basically, same as retail on shops

so if pc goes kaput I can transfer to new one. Providing it's not in use by 2 pcs at once?

I'm going to stick my neck out here and say "IMHO that depends".

My understanding is the Student version is an upgrade version. So transfer depends on the licence of the Windows version you're upgrading from. If the original Windows version was a retail version, then you can transfer that, activate it, then use the Win 7 upgrade. If the original Windows was OEM, the licensing doesn't allow it to be transferred, so you might have a problem.

If you purchased the PC with Windows already on it, it's probably OEM.

However, with an OEM licence, "if pc goes kaput" then you can under the terms of the licence agreement, in theory, transfer the license to a new PC, but you'll have to 'phone Microsoft and have them transfer the key.

Cheers. It didn't ask me for previous keycode or anything, it's just a retail version.

    Re: Buying win7 student offer.

just for info, ive been in touch with MS and digital river for over a year about student offers and the ultimate steal, theres plenty of hoops but it is open for staff in an academic instituion as well so if your an IT technician like myself you are eligible for the reduced prices on offer. (which are very generous)
