    Xcode slowdown

    hi,

ive got a macbook (2ghz c2d, 9400m, 2gb) and when editing 2000+ line files in xcode it is very sluggish for scrolling and typing. is there a way to fix this?

    thanks
    raceway99

p.s. i normally wrap the file to ~150 lines if this has anything to do with it

The obvious solution would be more RAM - bump your macbook up to 4GB and see how that works.

    Re: Xcode slowdown

Well, realistically i don't know what's going on inside it until we get more details about what xcode is doing - perhaps some debugger running in the background, i dunno, unless it's a software related problem (try a reinstall?).

But slowdown that only happens with large files, surely means more RAM?

Good point: Does it do this with small files too? (<500-1000 lines)

    EDIT:

I just tried opening 3000 lines on my Macbook (same model i assume), no slowdown at all - kind of silly thinking not enough RAM would do it, but are there any background applications working away that you've missed?

    Re: Xcode slowdown

sorry for late reply, i only got a forum e-mail this morning

there are normally some background processes, but activity monitor says their is ~500mb of free ram. i've reinstalled osx (10.5.8) and it hasnt made any difference. also the bottom of the case has been getting excesively hot lately, so im starting to think it might be a hardware error?

    cheers

    edit: oh and happy christmas

    Re: Xcode slowdown

It could be overheating, but I'm convinced that it's just Xcode being crap. I've never really heard of a machine with a hardware fault only acting weird with a glorified text editor.

Perhaps looking for an alternative might be helpful.

I only use xCode for iPhone dev so not sure this will be possible.

I'm not an OS X user so I really can't give any sound alternatives, sorry. :/

It'll be on the bottom right of a post. You'll be able to use it after 10 posts or something like that.

And Merry Christmas to you too.

    Re: Xcode slowdown

You could pay a lot of money to be able to dev against it in Mono thanks to Novel or something?

But I would have a look at what XCode is doing, does it happen with all projects, are there any add-ins?

Whilst I'd expect a mac tool for devs to be crap (because the only holy and pure software comes from the monastery of St. Jobs obviously) that level of awfulness is beyond the pale.

Try the sample apps in the SDK, see if you have a problem with them.

To put this into perspective, i'm on a crippled 32 bit dev machine, with re-sharper visual studio 2008 (both bad for memory useage) only 2 gig of RAM a solution with some 65 projects (someone is a moronic ****, but hey it only means it takes me more chargeable time.) and its using about 900 meg. There is about 300meg of source code and small-ish resources been compiled.

The slowdown is nothing compared to excel.......
