Getting Deus Ex to work with Windows 7

The problem I'm having with Deus Ex GOTY is that after starting, although I can get into each sub-menu in, say, Settings, I can't see any of the options. On some menus, the space where the option should be is covered by a black bar, which the mouse pointer disappears under. I'm running a Radeon 5750.

How old is that game? I know with some older games explorer.exe causes graphics problems, and you basically have to kill off explorer.exe and run commands through task manager (or batch file) to get it to run properly

I've been running it on my 32bit netbook W7 install with no problems at all...

Re: Getting Deus Ex to work with Windows 7

just installed it on my win7 64bit system and it worked with no problems,

there was an option to run it in either hardware - direct3d or software mode, maybe you selected the wrong one. thats one thing i can think of that may cause the problem you are having.

    reinstall and choose direct3d.

im not using admin/compatibility or any other tweaks to get it working, i just ran the setup.exe off the disk and it installed then worked.

Re: Getting Deus Ex to work with Windows 7

hmm, I did choose direct3D. I'll give it another go and see. It read the graphics card properly in setup. Can I use compatibility mode in Home Premium 64bit? Isn't it Ultimate only?

"XP Mode" is only in Ultimate/Professional, but cannot be used for gaming.

However, the game ought to work fine if you change the renderer. Also, make sure it's patched up.

Compatibility mode is in every edition, but XP mode is different (it's a virtual machine).

For compat. mode, right click the exe, choose properties, compatibility and choose some settings there. I usually use XP SP3, Admin, no themes, no desktop composition.

Re: Getting Deus Ex to work with Windows 7

Got it going. Menus started working properly once I watched the intro, funnily enough. Mind you, after a few years of Half Life 2, those textures are looking a bit ropey. Same great story though.

Re: Getting Deus Ex to work with Windows 7

Look up 'new vision mod' for improved environmental textures.

There's a DirectX 9 renderer available that adds bloom etc. The new vision mod requires a modded renderer. Updated OpenGL and DirectX10 renderers are also available but they're more for continued compatibility rather than updated features.

Unfortunately the HD character skins mod (HDTP) hasn't been completed so if you download it, you'll get Gunther Herman in HD textures only.
