Does anyone use Linux for 'gaming' anymore?

Been away from the Linux 'gaming' world since Q3A, been using it on my Macbook for dev but haven't had the need to stay in the loop so to speak...i mean is it still the case that 'Linux' support in new games is rarer than spotting Santa on your roof?

due to directX most games won't work on Linux unless their is also OpenGL support. You can use Wine for some games though.

Re: Does anyone use Linux for 'gaming' anymore?

It's a real shame too. Neverwinter nights was ported to natively run on linux (hurrah for OpenGL supporting game engines ) and ran beautifully on the onboard GeForce 4 MX in my old NForce 2 mobo - shame there are so few games / devleopers / publishers since then that have bothered to support the linux community... I really don't understand why so few games are developed in OpenGL now...

Re: Does anyone use Linux for 'gaming' anymore?

its a catch 22 situation game writers wont write for linux until people use it and people wont use it until there is games for it.
I wish programmers would write programs in languages that support multiple platforms.
You dont find cd players that only work in ford cars. You dont find dvd players that only work with sony tv's

companies should stop using proprietary stuff examples directx and cuda.

everyone has different likes and dislikes yet pretty much every who uses a computer uses windows it just seems stupid and I hope other operating systems can finally start to make a dent in the desktop computer market.

That's true, but if the game engines were utilised OpenGL then at least there'd be the possibility of them being ported to linux... once they go down the DX route it's all pain and hassle

HL2 / Source used to use OpenGL but due to people exploiting the code in multiplayer games support was removed.

Who's going to pay for that idealism though? If you develop in DirectX for example then you get free access to a whole suite of professional tools and libraries - which more often than not makes the difference between your project being financially viable and not. If the market share for open standards was worth the additional development cost then everyone would use it, but it will never be.

I think this is an exceptionally important point.

When I started my current job about 20 months ago one of my colleagues was trying to sort out a C# script he'd been sent to modify; I pointed him in the direction of the VS Express editions and he was really surprised that Microsoft would give away such powerful tools. The angle he hadn't considered was: the more developers they can encourage to develop for Windows / .NET / DirectX the more people they have tied in to Windows. No one in the Linux sphere has the same commercial incentive to help developers adopt OpenGL, and without that I can't see who would have the time to dedicate to making the same level of tools and libraries for portable OpenGL development. It'd be great if it happened, but I really can't see it.

Probably also hammers the nail in the coffin that .NET has been ported to Linux to. I do believe our very own DirectHex has a hand in the development of Mono

God send when you are working on a linux machine.

However that being said, I do also believe that DirectHex also runs the majority of his DX games in Linux and through steam. Can't remember if its through WINE or Cedega etc.

Wine, cedega, crossover all do a similar thing.

Yeah, I must play with Mono some time - but that'd mean getting a linux box up and running again and I have little enough time to write the websites I've promised family and friends on top of my day job without that as well Quite apart from the fact that to me mono will always be the BBS that I sank most of my first 3 years at uni into (I failed two of them, not surprisingly...)

I used to swear that I'd never go down the ASP / ASP.NET line and open source was the only thing, but the bottom line is that big corporations trust other big corporations, and the jobs all wanted IIS / ASP / .NET / Visual Studio, and there's not much point being a purist if you can't afford to keep a roof over your head and a decent broadband connection I've been pleasantly surprised with how good Microsoft's current offerings are, too: powerful, flexible, and well integrated. I occasionally come across something that makes me tear my hair out, but the norm is that I'm impressed by how easy it is to accomplish fairly complex tasks.

DX on Wine has come a long way over the last few years. Many DX9 games can actually work better on Linux/Wine than native NT execution.

Sims 3 is about 50% C# based, and has an embedded copy of Mono in it rather than using MS.NET (which is how the mac version is possible). It's troo!

    Not really.

Good luck getting GTA IV to run on Linux.
