I am after a good split screen file explorer program so I can easily sort out a few external drives and drag & drop files between drives easily.
xp/vista compatible

Directory Opus.

I use FreeCommander, I think this is the type of programme you mean, like a more powerful windows explorer. I mostly use it for finding directory size.
I use totalcmd, its keyboard-orientated though...
What stop you from doing the same thing with windows explorer?

xplorer2 is another one to consider, it has a 21 day trial

For those that remember Xtree (and its successor Xtree Gold (which were DOS file managers)
This

appears to be the windows successor. The user interface looks (from the site) to be very similar to the DOS interface, but Xtree was THE file manager in its day, and if this has the same functionality, it is probably worth a look. There is a 21 day trial available anyway.

opus looks great. but hefty price tag. just trying to trawl through how to get folders to display sizes automatically. it certainly has a million and one options..
i need a bit more functionality than just 2 windows open. Try Opus once and its hard to go back to just windows explorer
I've got a trial of Directory Opus downloading now, I've heard so much about it I figure I ought to try it out!

I have to admit, I find the Vista/W7 file manager less easy to use than in 2K or XP.
Tempted to give Directory Opus a try again, I think it would make much better use of my 24" monitors than explorer does. For some reason I always end up with far more isntances of Explorer open in W7 than I ever did before, and they seemt o take up far more room on screen than they should.
Perhaps I'm just dealing with more files than I used to, but it just seems like I can't get enough on screen at any one time. Also not keen on Vista/W7 removing the connecting lines between folders in the folder pain. That pain jumping about from side to side is distracting too. As far as I can think, this is the only real critisism I have of W7.
You really cant beat Opus. every file manager just seems crap in comparison.
everytime i use it i seem to find something new.
Much love for Opus, many licences for it as a result - really there isn't anything better period. The depth of the thing is vast (far beyond my needs which is no bad thing) the downside to that being that unless you put time into learning about it you'll only scratch the surface of what you can do with it. It's well worth checking out some of noodles tutorials (Pot Noodle another relic from the Amiga era) on their resource centre.
I'm a huge fan, having being a licenced user since the Amiga days for it and having met the guys who run the company many, many moons ago! It's about a near to fanboy as I get for a product
