New Vista install wont defrag and reports damge

    Hi guys,
RIGHT I have had enough of Vista 64 after 4 days.
I copied all my files to my primary HDD and vista install.
I then formatted the other drive to get rid of old system files from an old install and build.
    so far so good.
I then copied all the files from the primary HDD with Vista 64 on it to my second drive.
I then installed O&O Defrag 10. Applied and got a free licence.
I then ran a full analysis and defrag [tried all the different defrag options]
The primary disk reports at being 33% fragmented!!!!!!!! after running multiple defrags.
I then ran O&O Check Drive program and it reports DAMAGED FILE SYSTEM.
I have run windows scan disk on reboot and asked it to fix errors - it reported no errors.
O&O still reprts errors and wont defrag below 33% - it looks a total mess.
Anybody know what is going on here?

    thanxs guys
i really could punch Mr Windows Vista right in the kisser

Firstly this forum does not allow posts relating to software piracy so you might want to consider editing that post before a mod does it for you.
I'm not sure why that would happen since I'm not familiar with O+O but did you let it complete or stop it halfway? Also did you check to see what you were ticking before you changed the options? You could try a different defrag application, either the built-in Vista one, Defraggler or MyDefrag (formerly JKDefrag).

    I am not advocating piracy!!!!!!!!!!!!
i was thinking of downloading windows from MS and purchasing the licence!!! you can do this yes?
O&O is a free license they are giving away
no i completed all defrags properly - will try defragler

No you cannot download Windows (legally) unless you have a technet/MSDN subscription and even then it's not intended to be used on a home computer.

I think you can upgrade versions i.e. premium, ultimate etc with Windows anytime upgrade but I don't think you can upgrade OS i.e. Vista>7.

Re: New Vista install wont defrag and reports damge

It's probably going to be a lot cheaper if you buy it online from somewhere. Does checkdisk say it's repairing the errors? To schedule it to run and fix errors at next boot go start>type cmd>right click on cmd and click run as admin>in the new window type chkdsk driveletter: /f
So for drive C: you would type chkdsk C: /f
If it isn't a boot drive the scan should run straight away and display results.

Which means the file system has become corrupted somehow but files needed to run Windows are intact. Were you getting anything like this before running the defrag program?

Re: New Vista install wont defrag and reports damge

have you checked whwether its just the system restore files and/or ghost files?

have a look in control panel>system>properties. turn off system restore and click apply, this should delete all the restore points, have a look in the defrag program again and see what it says. the undefragmentable files might have dissapeared.

turn system restore back on and click OK.

I got that error in 7 when I formatted the drives with Acronis... maybe formatting with the Windows install disk is the answer.
