Remote desktop credentials W7 to XP

I can't quite figure this one out.

I have a server in the loft running XP Pro. I connect to it via standard RDP.

My desktop which used to run XP Pro connected to it, and I supplied the credentials (pcname\username and password) and was able to save those credentials so when I launched the shortcut, it authenticated and took me straight to the desktop.

I've now upgraded my desktop to W7 HP. I can connect to the server using RDP, but I always have to type in the credentials. I have saved the credentials too, but even when I use them, I still get presented with the logon box on the server.

Is this a limitation of home premium? It's no big deal, but it's a pain having to type in username and password all the time...

if you copy and paste the password in win7 it wont save, i had to type it manually when i upgraded for the 30 odd servers i maintain, pain in the arse but they are all saved now.

Try this. I've not had a problem with saved passwords in Win7 RDPing to any XP/2003/2008/7 PCs.

    Run mstsc.
    Options
Tick "allow me to save credentials"
    Customise any other options.
Be sure to type in the username
Click "Save As" and save the .rdp file
Click "Connect", log on to the other server/PC
Be sure to tick any boxes presented to save the password
Disconnect/close/log off from the other server/PC
Double-click the saved .rdp file - it should connect fine.

If it doesn't work, try adding a saved password manually - look in Credential Manager in Control Panel (switch to "small icons" view, you know you want to).

I've done all of that, saved the .rdp file. When I run it, it connects to the XP box but I'm presented with a enter username / password screen.

Have you remove the tick from the box "always ask for credentials"?

    Try using the username server\serveradmin.

    Also: http://blogs.msdn.com/rds/archive/20...ation-faq.aspx

Also check in gpedit.msc: User Configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Components > Remote Desktop Services > Remote Desktop Connection Client > Do not allow passwords to be saved

    The username dialog should read:

    Code:
    \\SERVER\Admin
    Mine:

To be fair I don't even use that dialog. I just right click on my server shortcut and connect that way, as below...

Re: Remote desktop credentials W7 to XP

Specifying the PC name before the username makes no difference. Still doesn't work.

I wondered about a policy setting where the W7 default was different to XP. Need to figure out how it all works; there's no such gpedit.msc, it's all changed...

    Will do some more searching.

edit: when you right click and get the "Connect with Remote Desktop" option, does it prompt you for credentials? Or can it use credentials stored in the W7 vault thingy?

edit2: gpedit is only available in W7 pro / ultimate / enterprise, not in home premium
