    reducing background noise/talking in recording

had to recently do an interview for my dissertation

it took place in a canteen, which was noise free to start with but got busier and busier as interview went on with loads of talking and laughing in background

what are my options for cleaning up the recording? it's hard to distinguish the actual voices i want sometimes

    cheers for any help

Get yourself a copy of Audacity and have a play with the noise gate / noise removal filters as well as EQ but be prepared to fiddle for a while with the frequencies. You will probably be able to improve the recording but I doubt you'll get anywhere close to 'removing' the noise. It might be best to try and re-record it or use a transcript.
