    avi->mpeg depends on the MPEG version you want to use - TMPGENC does mpeg1 for free and mpeg2 for 30 days without license. mpeg->avi i think Nandub will do.

    Define AVI.

    AVI is just a container, it describes how to store a video and audio stream and play it.

    If you are talking about converting DVD or other mpeg1/2 material to DivX or Xvid (these are mpeg4) then pop into www.doom9.org and have a look at their guides. Tey should have all the software you need.

    well ;

    i've got a VisionPlus Digital Freeview Tv Card and have recorded a few things from it onto my hard drive, one being a film having a file size of 2.5GB. It's perfect DVD quality as its recorded into mpeg quality (movietitle.mpg) so i'd just like to convert it into AVI format so to reduce the file size to 1.2GB at the most.

    When I say "movietitle.mpg" this is what the Tv Card saves it as , and i've no idea what format of mpeg it records as.

    Thanks for the link GateKeeper , I'll check it out in the morning ... its getting a bit late now

    it's likely to be MPEG 2. if you want to actually save space, you need to use a suitable codec with your avi - uncompressed audio & video is gonna be a gig a minute!

    mp3 & xvid should serve. doom9 should ahve the guides.
