Currently just going through the introduction to HTML ect on W3Schools and am quiet enjoying the step by step aproach.

My question is do you lot have any other resources that you could recomend for a complete beginer for this ie any books that you would recomend to a new starter ?

    Re: First Steps Into HTML

No cant reccommend a book cause I just used the web + course notes for my web design course.

I will give you a tip though. Get into the habbit of closing tags as soon as you open them. Otherwise its a pain in the arse trying to find out why your page won't validate.

DO as much handcoding as you can as you really get a feel for the code that way. WYSIWYG editors generate a whole load of crap code as well bloating pages.

    Re: First Steps Into HTML

HTML is the only coding I've ever done that I found genuinely enjoyable, did the whole thing by hand with Notepad++ and Firefox... and just looked various bits of code up on the net every now and again when I thought of something I wanted to generate, but didn't know how to do it.

I've always found books and that to be a pain in the neck, much better with a dual screen/dual PC approach and just constantly write, refresh, write, refresh etc. I learned really quickly when I did that, although I haven't done much since then so I'm probably back to square one by now.

Ah - get into learning cross-browser early... download IEtester and see what differences in HTML and CSS make in different browsers.

    Re: First Steps Into HTML

Sams teach yourself HTML 4 in 24hrs was a very good starter book - I suspect there's an updated edition now (although we're still using HTML4 11 years later - good lord, did I just say 11 years?). I'd definitely recommend the SAMS 24hr books for pretty much anything actually - I tend to chop and change languages a fair bit and I often go back to my SAMS even now.

Also, learn your way around the W3C website: http://www.w3.org/ - as you become more familiar with HTML and CSS this will gradually work its way up your list of important reference sites. I now use it more than any other single reference source for checking syntax, properties, etc.

As everyone says, you need to be aware of you different browsers react to your site, but you should always code to standards first, then add the fixes later.
