As the title says.
I'm going to install win7 64bit next week and was wandering how much space does a new install use, as the recommended space is 20gb.
Just want to know in advance as I might try vlite-ing Win7 over the weekend.
Thanks

Which flavour? I was rather under the impression that 20Gib was a *minimum* requirement, not a recommended.
That said - let me know which version and I can soon build a Win7 VM and let you know exactly how much a virgin install takes up.
EDIT - I only have my Ultimate media to hand, so I'm setting that building. I'll check in the morning and let you know.
EDIT2 - I know, I can install any version from Ultimate, but... chances are that this will take up the most space so it'll be a worst case scenario for mikemikemi

http://www.microsoft.com/windows/win...TTracking=true says it requires 16Gb for 32 bit, 20Gb for 64 bit. My virgin Win7 Ultimate 64 bit takes up 10.5Gb of diskspace. This is before *anything (no updates, nothing added or removed - literally as it finished the OOBE).
Try it - the installer will accept partitions less than 16gb with ease, although it will whinge about it a bit
MS say one thing, installer it say another It has two stages of whinge - first, it says 'ohh you probably ought to have some more space than that matey' and second it flat refuses to install.
Having spent a bit of time getting W7 onto a 4gb SSD for the eePC i did play around a fair bit
Of course, none of this is relevant most of the time - and yes the recommended mins are in line with what's sensible! My HTPC install if 15gb occupied for example, on a 40gb drive.
My bloated clogged up windows folder takes up 13GB total. There may be more stuff like pagefile lurking about but I haven't touched any of those settings. I'm using W7 pro 64bit.

Cool thanks for the responses, I'm not lacking space, but I think I will try vlite and see what it comes down to, but won't be going extreme, just going to cut out the rubbish I don't need.
I wouldn't vlite unless your absolutely desperate to reduce it's space - it can cause real problems if you remove bits you end up needing later on.
1TB = ~60quid
Space not an issue
Or, in SSD terms:
60GB = ~1T£
OK, a little extreme maybe, but I can see good reasons for wanting to unbloat Win 7 for sticking on a small SSD OS drive. Once SSDs get down to below £1 / GB it won't be too bad - at the minute a 40GB SSD is affordable, but not really big enough for 7
...my HTPC install, on a 40gb SSD, is 15gb
And the Mrs' machine has the same 40gb SSD with lots o' apps installed working just fine too
That's without any special tricks or moving stuff off to the mechanical storage drives too (which is always an option). As an OS drive I find 40gb plenty and massive improvement in system speed/responsiveness In any case, the point is - don't strip stuff out unless you know what the heck you're doing as you could be looking at a reinstall to get it back again further down the road. The one and only time i've lite-d the install was to get it onto a 4gb SSD drive (quite a push) otherwise why the heck bother?
This is a minimal reduction, probably just languages, drivers, not changing any services or applying any tweaks.
Although I have been told this can give some good savings, if it screws things up I can always do the normal install.
Also, I have an 80gb ssd (40gb drives in raid), so space isn't a massive issue, but any space I can save will be useful for other things I install.
Just an update, after jumping through hoops to get vlite working and then reduce win7 only to find it fails to install at the last bit is quite infuriating.
Guessing I ticked or unticked a box I shouldn't have...........don't think I can face trying it again any time soon. I think I can live with the standard install size.
Thanks for everyones' replies though
For those concerned, my Win 7 64 bit Ultimate with all my most important programs and drivers installed plus a bit of extra is taking up 16.5GB
so a 40 gig ssd would be just perfect/enough for the win 64 bit install ?
