Problems with my WHS

If this is ongoing, could you confirm whether you have any problem with drop outs, etc, when streaming media FROM the server TO your normal computer (assuming you use the server for that purpose).

Have you installed any add ons? If so, which? May I suggest LightsOut, which has a handy little graph which shows when each computer on the network is on, as well as the server, which may be helpful to you.

Have you updated WHS through windows update? I personally found that powerpack 3 caused massive headaches, and have gone without it since a reinstall (though only a few of us appear to report problems with PP3).

Lastly, have you tried new cables? Longshot, but might work.

When you re-install on the new server, take the 'telephone' option.It will give you a UK freephone number to call and reference number to quote. In all probability you won't even get transferred to an operator, it will just accept your ref no. and give you the new activation number.
I've done this quite a few time now with no problems.

Thanks Snooty, when I rebuild the server I will know then for sure what the problem is. The cables are all fine as I have tried them. All Cat 6 leads of good quality. I always keep the server updated through automatic updates so if PP3 was on that then I would have it too yet.

I thought Windows 7 was the problem but I was having these problems before via XP so its not that> im hoping a rebuild and reinstallation will suffice. if not I'll be ditching WHS completely and think of it as a bad investment and will know better for the future

One question I do have though so as to rule out, this is how my network is setup

Basically I have the router downstairs which the internet is on obviously. I have that connected to my GB Switch Via ethernet and then my laptop, computer and WHS all connect to the switch. Is this ok?

That layout sounds fine. As a matter of interest, what type of switch do you use, as that can have noticeable affects on passthrough.
When starting from scratch, http://www.smallnetbuilder.com/ have some very good reviews/articles and if possible, I always try to go for a more powerful switch - a managed one if at all possible, but it depends on the Customer.

Thats the switch I have there mate. Only thing connected to it is the server my computer and a laptop. although usually the laptop isnt connected when im on the main computer.
