Windows 7 - No response from keyboard or mouse

Have had windows 7 Premium installed since october and been using it with no problems until yesterday.

Put the computer into sleep mode prior for leaving for work. Upon returning I woke it up, however the mouse and keyboard were not responding. Couldn't type the password to get back in or do anything. Very odd. So I restarted the computer. Same problem.

Keyboard and mouse are fine, definitely have power and when it comes to the boot selection screen I can pick options with the keyboard. I can get into the bios. They only stop responding when I enter win 7. Regardless I have tried another keyboard and mouse and both had the same problem.

Have tried soft and hard resets and booting in all safe modes. Tried putting the installation disc back in and doing a repair. No luck.

Have looked on google to no avail and actually got so fed up I installed a new windows 7 installation on a blank hard disk partition which works fine with the keyboard and mouse. Really want to get the other original installation working again, can anyone help me? I'm so confused by what's happened.

Check that USB is in legacy mode in BIOS first of all - shouldn't be the problem given you can get into BIOS, but worth a try.

Could be a core system file in windows that's gotten corrupted - aside from the normal repair have you tried a system file check (sfc)? Not sure it's still applicable for windows 7, but maybe worth a try.

Did already check that it was in legacy mode, but didn't think to try the system file check. Will give that a go and report back, thanks for the suggestion.
