    Window 7 Not Genuine

I turned my machine on and it had the little 'this copy of Windows 7 is not genuine' watermark at he bottom right of the screen. My copy is a 100% genuine retail copy and luckily reregistering it cured it of that little hiccough, but it's kind of worrying that it would just do that.

Has anyone else experience this over the last few days? I wonder if it was anything to do with last Tuesday's update?

This is perfectly normal, until the software is registered

    Re: Window 7 Not Genuine

Same happened to me on one of my Win 7 laptops - I'd forgotten to activate it and the machine had been sitting dormant for some time (I could've sworn it was just a few days but it turned out to be weeks.)

As a slight aside, I see that Microsoft is planning to roll out an update that tackles 70ish cracks/exploits in the near future so I wonder if any legit copies will get flagged incorrectly.

    Re: Window 7 Not Genuine

The odd thing is that I thought I'd registered it after I installed it (just after 7 was released). I suppose I might have forgotten but I didn't see the warning until yesterday.

Windows 7 seems to register itself as and when it pleases. I've yet to work out an actual pattern to what it does, and last time I had a copy tell me it had failed to register (because I hadn't plugged my wireless dongle in yet!) I couldn't work out where in the menu systems to go and activate it manually. Odd thing, really...

To activate manually you right click on my Computer, click properties then scroll down to the bottom and it's there.

Nope. Haven't done any hardware upgrades for almost a year now...

    Re: Window 7 Not Genuine

Microsoft rolled out an update through automatic updates thats checking for pirated versions, seems like it made a mistake though?

    Re: Window 7 Not Genuine

That update is not being rolled out until later in the month - without checking it's the 24th that I've got in my head.

I can confirm from a colleagues machine that this message appears when you've not activated, but are using the grace period (with or without rearming) when that grace period expires.

This is not the first time I've heard about this. Infact I would say this is the third or fourth thread I've read on the same subject. Re-activating and rebooting usually fixes it.

Depending if there is also any error code during activation, you may have to re-type your Product Key.
