    The Browser Choice Screen

So we are soon to be given the options that we already know we had in the form of The Browser Choice Screen. This is all well and good for the home user but how the hell will this work for a corp IT environment? Are we going to have end users given this option? If so thats going to be a nightmare!

It will be done through a windows update.
WSUS can control that. If you are in a corporate environment and don't use WSUS you either have 15 or less PC's or deserve everything you get!

well we have a lot of contracts who haven't requested it and have not listen to us when we suggest it. Nothing we can do about that.

Or you have an IT support firm who think WSUS is a waste of time and won't help you install it

You can't expect them help you install new software for free.
However I can help you install it if you wish. Make sure you have the proper authorisation before thinking about it. If you are interested, send me a PM detailing your network with company specific information like IPA's etc removed.

Jim - WSUS is a doddle to configure, and may be a good type of project to get some experience with - perhaps make the suggestion to the head of IT that it may be something that you could take care of in-house. Like Badass, I'll be more than happy to help out if needed.

What worries me is the idea that if people aren't using WSUS then what the hell *are* they using to manage patches on Windows machines? All users as local admins?!

To be fair, that sort of thing is precisely what we pay them for.

I know you're already aware that I'm not the most knowledgeable when it comes to corporate networks, but it appears that it's worse than you imagined... as the sole member of the IT department, I guess that would make me the head of IT . That's partly why the support firm has always had the attitude that they choose what we do, and when we do it - I get the impression that they consider themselves to be head of IT. That attitude will probably still be there when I leave.

Your second point is precisely why I want WSUS - nothing manages patches on the Windows machines, it's a complete disaster. As far as I can gather, it's always been a very ad-hoc arrangement. The machines *should* be setup to automatically update for the urgent patches via per-machine configuration, as you're no doubt aware, but you only find out when you log into one as admin whether that's actually working properly. A few machines I've logged onto to fix, and discovered that they haven't had a single update in the last 3+ years. As for updates that don't come under the automatic forced installs, none of them are installed at all on any of the machines. And since none of the machines have Microsoft Update, that means no Office updates either. When I first arrived, one of the first things I did was install a service pack for Office 2003 - SP3 as it happened. So it's all fairly stupid, non-conforming, and lazy. But apparently that's always been considered acceptable. And the IT firm also think that it's acceptable.

So once I'm over this little mound I've got in front of me at the moment, I'll be ploughing headlong into WSUS... I'm fairly confident that it'll go okay, and the advice will be much appreciated from both of you.

I was just frustrated that an external firm thinks they can pick and choose what we do with our own network, but that's just their attitude.

no sweat Jim. Worst case scenario you get some valuable experience for your CV, and you just might learn a couple of things to boot

    Re: The Browser Choice Screen

It is a pretty ridiculous idea, I would say it's only the EU proving a point that they have power over a massive company like Microsoft Corp.

The most shocking thing about the whole browser choice screen is how awfully designed it is. Most people are just gonna think it's a load of rubbish and ignore it, although that's probably what Microsoft would like to happen.
