This is true, mint does have certain packages preinstalled that ubuntu doesn't though but just the "dirty" stuff I think? flash player and a bunch of codecs. Oh it has compiz preinstalled to, which is an extra package for ubuntu? For some reason it has got 4 media players, 3 that do both video and audio and that seems excessive. Other than that I can't fault it, UI and colour scheme is nice.

Yeah, Mint is slightly more newbie friendly than Ubuntu and the look and feel is closer to Windows than default Ubuntu install. Other than that, there isn't a massive difference.
The other alternative is ofcouse KDE based distros, which are again closer to Windows. Personally, I like Open Suse for that, but nothing beats the ease of apt
By the way, I forgot to mention another advantage of Linux. Put /home on a different disk partition than / and you would most probably never lose your data, even if you have to reinstall the OS. I often wonder why MS hasn't thought about such a simple thing
Oh it is now? I've not used it since... 8.04 (I think) or at least the last version I used I had to download the packages through the synaptic package manager.
I guess mint is now; improved interface and dirty stuff included... Ahhh, I'm just trying to justify my recommending it now lol! truth is use mint and enjoy using it Linux is always a talking point though, whenever I use my netbook out and about someone asks me what it is I am using because of all the sexiness on the screen I just turn on compiz if I really want to show off.
