You can? Even better! I can pop it on my VPS.

Heh, t'is good huh, I don't just recommend any old tripe ;)
I would never use VNC open to outside the LAN due to how easy it is to get around any encryption, it is a joke tbh.
Some others to consider: GoToMyPC/GoToAssist (the latter is probably more appropriate for your usage).
I setup Neorouter on my VPS and managed to talk my dad through installing the client and a VNC server, and it works! Huzzah. I can tweak his firewall rules now to make sure VNC is only listening on the VPN interface.
Awesome software, and even better for allowing me to run my own server, as my VPS is sat on a nice fat pipe and so long as the disk isn't getting hammered it's a speedy machine. Thanks for spotting this one mycarsavw!
A slightly more complicated but probably a more secure way is to use VNC and SSH. I personally use this to tunnel into my home box and also to encrypt my traffic when using public hotspots. This is a good tutorial for such a setup. No reliance on a third party. Only thing you need is either a static IP or a dynamic dns solution such as NoIP or DynDns.org. What's more, you can run the ssh server on port 443 and use your work network if the usual ssh ports are blocked
A decent ssh server for windows can be found here
