I'm at my parents home, and Ma has a new W7 lappy from Dell.

Lovely thing, stunning screen, and quick. But I can't find her Shared Folders.

I mean,.... in XP on my old man's PC, it's so easy you just share a file and it's sorted. Default shared files... click My PC and the bugger's there.

But where are they on this rig? I wanted to share her My Pictures folder with a Right Click so Dad could stuff loads ofd photo's of the family in it via his PC.

But I can't seem to share the regular files without passwords and other stuff that's not important in a closed network (ie their home)

So I thought I'd just show her the Shared File............. which is..... where?

Don't you just type in \\<computer-name>\<folder> in the search/run dialogue?

thanks Gonzo.. thing is I've sussed it out that way but i THOUGHT I was just being a total nubber finding the Shared Folder by clicking My PC, then clicking Network on the left, then clicking this Laptop's icon, then Users, then Public... and making a shortcut to the desktop.. but it seems that is the right way.

I have to ask.. why is that progress?

progress as in microshaft want everyone on W7 using the homegroups

homegroup worried me to begin with cos I thought she'd got HOME instead of WORK GROUP as the default network name but it was all ok.. that's just a red herring to put me off

That's my main bugbear with vista/7 - so many tasks have been lengthened from 2 clicks in XP to navigating through several windows
