    Windows 7 question

In the next month I should be able to get my computer back up and running (house electricity has been playing up) So when all is sorted I intend to get Windows 7 and start afresh. Now while looking on play.com I saw Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium / Upgrade for £67.99 . Now am I right in thinking I would need to upgrade from vista to sue this? (I'll be upgrading from XP) The reason I ask is that one of the reviewers said this:

"Microsoft played a crafty one here folks , yes its supposed to be used as an upgrade but you can also do a clean install on a new build with it, you just need to install over the top when it dont accept the key the first time, you see as long as it finds a windows folder the key will work fine.
so buy this one and not the retail and save half th price in the process."

Can anyone confirm this??? Otherwise i'll have to fork out £129

One other question i want to add here instead of making anew thread is this:

I have all my itunes music backed up on to a external hard drive. Now when I install windows 7 and get itunes on it, do I simply just move the music back to the itunes folder?

    Thank in advance!

    Re: Windows 7 question

    From here - http://www.microsoft.com/windows/buy/default.aspx

If you're ready to purchase Windows 7 for your own PC, order or download it today. All Windows XP and Windows Vista editions qualify for a Windows 7 upgrade.
unlike previous upgrades that could be installed on a blank machine, you just had to provide the disks or license key for the previous version, W7 requires Windows to have been installed on that system previously.

I don't think it actually upgrades the install, it just looks for it to be there.

    Re: Windows 7 question

Thanks! I assume the £129 version is for complete new builds then.

Oh and I right in thinking that the home premium version has the 64-bit version included?

The full retail version has both 32 and 64 bit disks, I don't know about the upgrade version.

    Re: Windows 7 question

The upgrade version does include 32bit and 64 bit versions

Can someone confirm that this will be ok to install on an XP system?? Reason I ask is that it says "Windows Vista Home Premium 32-bit or 64-bit" and no mention of XP there. I'm sure it is ok, but wanted to double double check.

    Thanks

    Re: Windows 7 question

Well I assume it's the same as this, which does say XP (any version)

    http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/Micro...2-64Bit-Retail

so Scan and MS both say you are good to go, I think Play are just bad at completing the specs of their products properly.

    Re: Windows 7 question

When I set out to do a clean install of Windows 7 x64 on a new build with 2 hard drives (one for OS, one for data etc), the Windows installer baulked. I had to disconnect drive 1 before the installer would recognise drive 0.This means that drive letters are assigned to optical drives before the (reconnected after install) 2nd hard drive.
I am now about to install the same OS on another system also with 2 hard disks. Has anyone found a workaround for this installation anomaly? Any tips gratefully received.

It will work fine. As long as XP is activated on the machine the Win7 installer will see this and basically install a new fresh OS to the machine - not upgrade it as there isn't an upgrade path from XP -> Win7.

I have bought the ultimate edition for windows 7 as i'm a post graduate student so get the discount. Now I know with the ultimate edition I can make an image of windows 7 with all the settings to back up. If say in 6 months I decide to get a new hard drive can I then simply move that saved image onto the drive?? Oh and if I can is there a good guide to use?

Hope I have asked the question clearly enough.

    Thanks

you should be able to use the imaging tool that comes with windows 7 to create an image and restore to another hard drive. I havent tryed it .If not you can get a trial of image for linux (a boot disc) to clone one hard drive to the other. image for windows would also do the clone.

    Re: Windows 7 question

There is an easy guide on Imaging here.

Plus, there is no problem doing what you say re drives. It would only become a problem if the actual hardware, (m/b etc), had also been changed.
