Realtek AC97 - fresh install of Vista = no sound

I've just upgraded my nieces computer with my old bits (Abit KN9, AMD X2 6000) which I used for the past 2 years with absolutely no problems whatsoever but upon installing Vista (Ultimate 64) there is no sound being produced. Vista says it is working correctly but I've tried installing different drivers and there is still no sound. When the board was in my computer I had front ports for sound and mic and a header plug with connected to the mobo but my nieces case doesn't have this, so I checked the bios to make sure there wasn't a setting for this, which there isnt.

Has anybody any idea why this isn't working?

    thanks.

Silly question, but have you checked the sound device is currently set as default (control panel classic view -> sound, the one named Speakers should be default)? I didn't realise on installing my ATI card that it had forced me onto the HDMI passthru output, and wasted some time wondering what was broken.

Re: Realtek AC97 - fresh install of Vista = no sound

I had this problem with the wife's laptop.
There was a 'Recommended' Microsoft update that FUBARd the sound. If I rolled the system back and then re-applied the updates WITHOUT that patch it worked fine.

Still struggling with this, its seeing it as a working device, even showing the sound output bars when something is playing but no sound.

Hardware issue ? Have you checked the physical connections ?
Could be something as simple as a piece of soldering come away when you upgraded
    Society's to blame,
    Or possibly Atari.

Re: Realtek AC97 Realtek HD = no sound

I had a bit of a problem with this as well (Realtek HD though not AC97). My speakers could do a test tone but I couldn't get them to output anything else. I had made the assumption that sound would be pumped out from all audio orifices simultaneously, this seems not to be the case. I can only get sound from the output that I set as default. Setting the default was not helped by the fact that the Analogue output is called Speakers (instead of Analogue Output, similar to the Digital Output tab which is next to it) and the button on the Speakers Tab is labelled; Set Default Device, instead of Set AS Default Device.

This was a bit of a head-scratcher so I hope I've helped you if you happen to wander across this post.
