    Windows CDs

    Hi there,

I need to get Windows CDs with no product keys required for all versions from XP onwards both 32 and 64bit in order to install on customer's PCs and use their COA.

I don't know how to go about this without going to Microsoft directly and this will take about a month or more.

Can I download them (legit) anywhere?

    Thanks,

    Ben

    Re: Windows CDs

I remember looking for these ages ago and came to the conclusion that it was impossible to do it "legit style".

Not that I think there's anything wrong with downloading a Windows disk from any site in the world, since it's the key that's the issue, not the disk, but that's another conversation altogether.

I have been told that companies can get them from 'technet' by they pay a subscription.

I really don't want to download them in the ways that can be done tbh

The thing is though, a lot of customers won't have their CD so they will expect me to provide the CD.

Are you registered as a Microsoft Partner? I let mine lapse, but I seem to remember a bunch of info about it in the partner area about obtaining system building kits etc. and I'm pretty sure they'd sort you out.

However getting the right download for the version of license each client has will be tricky - you would need to go to something like technet to get Dell OEM versions etc. I expect, if that's even possible.

Clients *should* be able to get replacement copies of the media from the company they purchased from originally.

Technet is slightly different, it provides software keys for all Microsoft products for testing purposes - although obviously it provides .iso downloads as well, or the keys would be fairly useless.

And yeah, I recognise why you wouldn't to, just saying I'm not aware of any other method by which it can be done.

    Re: Windows CDs

Problem is you need a different cd for EACH version either retail, corp or OEM as the keys are different for each

    Re: Windows CDs

Yeah there are so many different versions that have different keys and obviously corp that doesn't need activating, xp at least.

I'm not registered as a Microsoft Partner but I will look into it as it sounds a way forward.

    Thanks

Edit: Another thing is that if a customer's PC didn't ship with a full copy of the OS and it had just a restore CD and that couldn't be found, I would have to install an OEM version but the product key might not work, or would it?

I am downloading a 545MB ISO from MS at the moment it says:

Windows XP Service Pack 3 - ISO-9660 CD Image File

If your download does not start after 30 seconds, click here: Start download
    Instructions

Windows XP Service Pack 3 (SP3) includes all previously released updates for the operating system. This update also includes a small number of new functionalities, which do not significantly change customers’ experience with the operating system.
This file is a CD image file for users who wish to create an update CD for Windows XP Service Pack 3, for example for offline installation by administrators.

I do not know if this is just the SP3 or the full XP including SP3 built in, but I will find out when I put it on CD.

Did a bit of googling as Ive got the file now and full XP SP3 copies are like 5MB over the size of this ISO so I am going to burn it now and see whats on it.

Just the SP3 update CD, as it says Doesn't include XP.

Edit: Another thing is that if a customer's PC didn't ship with a full copy of the OS and it had just a restore CD and that couldn't be found, I would have to install an OEM version but the product key might not work, or would it?
If it was the exact same OEM version (ie from the manufacturer) as was installed on their computer in the first place then it would work - but it would be identical to the restore CD I think.

You were right, I burnt it to CD put it on another PC and its just the SP3, how on earth can service pack 3 be 545mb or whatever it is?? I am sure the entire XP SP2 is the same kind of size that is why I didnt even look at the contents before burning it.

Bit of a waste of time and bandwidth but at least I have a SP3 CD now lol

It has to include everything you could possibly need to download during the process of updating, so lots of dependencies and spare copies of things, plus there have been one or two patches over the years..

*shrugs* It was pretty good, SP2 was brilliant, and SP3 was just further icing on the cake. One of the best value operating systems from Microsoft ever.

XP is just 2000 with extra stuff and it looks nicer from what I have worked out and experienced over the years, but at least its stable and not based on 9x lol

I have e-mailed Microsoft in the UK about becoming a Partner and downloading ISOs. I wonder if I will get a reply..

    Re: Windows CDs

Basically you need the right download for the particular key, so you'd need 1 for Dell, 1 for HP, 1 for Compaq, 1 for general OEM, 1 for upgrade etc

Basically it's impossible to do legitimately, especially now XP is defunct.
