Re: RAID Alternatives / Mirroring Solutions?
Good thread - and some really useful links - I have been looking at this problem (but not seriously :) ) for a while - but this has got me thinking about it again. I like the look of Allway sync which, in its one way configuration, I think will meet my needs. Don't think I really need instantaneous syncing.
Re: RAID Alternatives / Mirroring Solutions?
I have set up backups between mine and my parents house using synctoy.
Both sites are connected via an IPSEC tunnel and use Synctoy every evening to sync the backups folder from my PC to my parents and my parents to my PC.
My girlfriends PC uses windows backup to back up to my backups folder. If either sire were to be destroyed, the other site should have a few months of backups. And it's all free.
Alway sync is simpler to set up and use though, albeit marginally. That's used to Sync my girlfirends USB key to her PC.

Just been testing BestSync 2010 awesome freeware backup software that does everything I want and actually works better than ViceVersa so far.
Edit: Ahh.. not freeware D:.. but still best I've found so far.

My favourite of these apps is FreeFileSync - I came across it when I was looking for an alternative to Synctoy, which I've always found slow, feature-limited and unreliable.
There's a lot of powerful functionality which isn't immediately obvious - for example, it has a real-time syncing facility, which you can start as a Windows service (have a look in the help file under "Advanced").
It also installs as a native 64-bit app if that's important to you. :)

I'm testing FreeFileSync, CaptainCrash, So far so good! It's amusing how often free software is superior to paid software.
