RAID Alternatives / Mirroring Solutions?
Hey :3~
I'm looking for mirroring software that is not RAID, that will near instantaneously mirror the contents of a folder, every change made to the contents of a folder and all of its files and subfolders, contents of subfolders etc etc to the chosen backup location.
To expand more... it will.. monitor, detect and log changes and then execute the required changes to the destination folder rather than be more closely integrated to the core of the os and hardware (RAID).
Thankies :3~

Re: RAID Alternatives / Mirroring Solutions?
yes, it can sync a destination directory with a source

Heh, perhaps I will have to do some experiments, imagine for example if the destination became corrupted and the software synced the changes back to the source, I have to be completely sure that it is only doing mirroring and not "syncing".
I'm always wary of anything with the word "Sync" in it, can be very dangerous indeed.

I'm pretty sure Norton Ghost does what you want too...? Is Norton Ghost even available anymore? :O_o1:

No one mentioned OS version...

To clarify you can chose how synctoy works with each folder pair. You can 'echo' changes made on one folder to another, but it doesn't have to be bi-directional.

Nifty, I definitely need the bi-directional box or whatever it is firmly unchecked.

Not really, any sync software worth its salt will have a one-way sync function.
I used to use Allway Sync for USB sticks, and that was exactly the same.
Option 1: Bi-directional sync
Option 2: A-->B sync
Option 3: B-->A sync
The only extra feature you'll need is to monitor for changes and sync automatically.
Re: RAID Alternatives / Mirroring Solutions?
SyncToy's echo is fine, but, it doesn't have the monitoring feature I need.
Google's found me ViceVersa and BeyondSync so far that have real time folder sync :)
Re: RAID Alternatives / Mirroring Solutions?
Been testing ViceVersa.. it satisfies my needs pretty well.. time will tell with reliability and such.. the only thing left now is.. instantaneous backup of Microsoft Office documents that are currently open.. sync software doesn't seem to want to deal with those :s.
Re: RAID Alternatives / Mirroring Solutions?
Well, what if you got a virus and your "instantaneous" mirroring copied the virus / corrupted file over to the other side?
Backups are best done in an interval (e.g. 1 day) rather than instantaneous, and even better a rotation so you have the most recent backups rather than just one.

ViceVersa can keep older copies of updated files in a different specified location to deal with this problem :).
And frankly, losing even 1 minute, 10 minutes, 30minutes of work on a critical document or piece of work would be a frightful PITA.
