    Windows 7 Upgrade Strategy

Right, I have Windows 7 Home Premium Retail installed on my desktop, and I've bought Windows 7 Professional Upgrade to put on the desktop I'm building for my girlfriend.

However, I'm thinking it might make more sense to put the 7 Pro on my desktop.

How simple is the install process? I've got this nice idea in my head that I pop in the key and my install magically upgrades itself to Pro version and all of the features appear as necessary, perhaps with the odd file pulled off the disk/internet.

And then I just install Windows 7 Home Premium on the new desktop as normal - since it's a standard retail edition.

Seems easier than mucking around with rearming and registry edits to make the upgrade edition act like a retail, as far as I can tell, although it all depends on how easy the install process is. If I'll need to wipe my Windows install on my desktop, I think I'll give it a miss.

You're pretty much bang on - have a look at http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/w...nytime-upgrade

Ah brilliant. I love you Microsoft. Albeit temporarily, after the eye-poking-out-with-pencils issue from your Office team a few days ago

    Re: Windows 7 Upgrade Strategy

That was surprisingly easy actually - went to System, then "Get more features with a new edition of Windows 7". Whacked the key in, then after a couple of reboots job done.

On the downside, MS accused my girlfriend of being a pirate on desktop 2, but you can't have everything I guess.

Well, effectivly she is, isnt she?

You have a Home Premuim full version and an UPGRADE for that. Not two seperate OS installs.

Well, at least thats how Bill will see it.

Nah, it's okay now. Phoned up and it's stopped accusing me of piracy.

If I really wanted to I could pop my Vista Ultimate disc in and use that as an upgrade, or equally my XP Pro disc, so I'm not too fussed.

Well, this is what I did....

Went to local PC shop, bought an old Compaq case with a Vista Home key sticker on it, and upgraded to Win 7 Pro from there.

Is that strictly legal?? TBH, Im not sure, but it worked.,
