key code with both 32 & 64 bit??

hi i was just asking for a friend
he bought a windows 7 key a few months ago as part of a student promotion thing to use on his laptop (32bit) long story short he is now getting a better computer that will run 64bit and wanted to know if he can use that same code with a 64bit cd or if he has to buy a whole new liscence just for 64bit
im pretty sure that he can just use that code but some people have said that you cant so just wanted to check.
FYI: he wont be using the same key on both systems he will probably put linux or (dare i say ) vista on his laptop so there wont be anything iligal hapening

Yes, obviously he will have to acquire or borrow the disc itself, but the key is valid for both.

It does need to be the same version (HP, Professional etc) - you/he could use this if necessary.
