Win7 - one aero effect keeps disabling itself

Hi all,

Been using Windows 7 mostly quite happily for a few months now. One small thing continues to drive me up the wall tho - the Aero effect which animates windows when minimizing and maximizing keeps switching itself off.

Am sure Vista didn't do this and it's not like my PC isn't up to Aero effects, and it's just this one effect out of the whole lot. I keep the Visual Effects setting in the Performance Options applet set to "Custom" and leave everything enabled, but usually after waking from sleep or a reboot the setting is disabled again. Leaving that page set to "Adjust for best appearance" does the same thing.

Any ideas?

Check your graphics drivers are up to date.
Check Windows is fully up to date.

They're the 2 main things I'd do first.

Is it doing at particular times? i.e. is there a reasonable amount of memory usage / processor activity when it disables?

Just to update this... I eventually figured out that it's the Citrix plugin/client thing I very occasionally use for work. If it's uninstalled the Aero effects stay as they are set.

I have seen similar issues before with certain pieces of software that like to interfere with Aero settings. Glad you got it sorted, and thanks for posting up the solution after all this time!

I only encountered these problems on an old PC when booting Windows 7, Was the graphics card

Cheers snooty, I hate threads that just tail off so thought I'd better update

@dylantor, I did think graphics card at first but it's done the same thing on three different ones now. I only really noticed it after I reinstalled the Citrix client after not having had it installed for a long time, if I remove the client and re-enable the effects then they stay enabled. The minute I install the Citrix client and use it for something then the effects are disabled again.
