    Encyption for usb and folders

guys, i am after a simple program to encrypt my usb drives and some folders on my laptops hardrive. I need the encryption to be able to be decrypted on the move as well e.g I plug the usb stick into any other machine and it asks for password etc for access and the same sort of use for the folders on my hardrive

i dont mind spending upto £30 for a solution

    thanks

Re: Encyption for usb and folders

I've just started using TrueCrypt in the last few days which is excellent for this sort of thing. However, I have no idea if you can make it ask for a password without having it installed.

Anyone else know if it can? (Ps its free)

Truecrypt will do that, but you can onl;y decrypt on a machine that either has it installed, or one in which you have admin privileges. (You can put an executable on the USB stick, but it needs admin priveliges to run.)

There are some secure USB sticks available that may do the job

    or there is this one

If you have Win7 Ultimate, you can use bitlocker to go.
Doesn't seem to be available on the home version though.

I tried it out when I ran W7 on beta. (I guess you could setup the beta on another rig to encrypt your flash drives)

Windows 7 Enterprise also has bitlocker to go. I have Windows 7 Ultimate but still use Truecrypt because of the ability to install on other machine types. Bit for one machine/device Bitlocker to go is perfect.

Re: Encyption for usb and folders

+1 for Ironkey which is extremely secure but expensive or
+1 for Truecrypt which is about the best free solution available and it does full-drive encryption even for your boot drive. I've not tried it but there is this you can use for mounting TC volumes without admin privileges: http://sourceforge.net/projects/tcexplorer/

Edit: I've also just found this but it's the first time I've heard of it so I don't know how secure/trustworthy etc it is: http://www.rohos.com/products/rohos-mini-drive/

another +1 for truecrypt as an idea, but with regular use you might start getting frustrated with the whole process, i don't even have a password on my computer because it's just tedious. i've dabbled with it just out of interest and it's powerful, just unfortunately don't own any documents worth encrypting

USB Safeguard seems to be as simple as it gets and works on Xp - w7 on guest account.
Probably the one I'll be using on a couple of my flash drives.
