Bioshock 2 Good on XP32 Poor on XP64
I have just tried Bioshock 2 on 2 different PCs.
PC1 - Q9550 GF8800-512Mb 4GB ram XP32 Creative Audigy 4
PC2 - Q9650 GTX470 8GB ram XP64 Creative XFi Gamer
As expected the FPS is better on PC2 but when I pan round the screen on PC2 is very jerky but the screen on PC1 is very smooth. Also, during the initial startup video, the sound chops on PC2 but plays perfectly on PC1.
Similar problems occur on other games tried on both systems and the link always seems to be:-
XP32 = smooth, sound perfect
XP64 = jerky, sound choppy
Does anyone have any ideas?:help:
Re: Bioshock 2 Good on XP32 Poor on XP64
XP64 isn't supported by most games, so it's always going to be a bit hit and miss.
Re: Bioshock 2 Good on XP32 Poor on XP64
Yeah, XP64 wasn't supported by anything really - even MS Security essentials doesn't have a XP64 version! You should consider upgrading to 7 64, you can download an evaluation here to see what it's like: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/e.../cc442495.aspx
Re: Bioshock 2 Good on XP32 Poor on XP64
XP64 doesn't exist. It's a badge they slapped on 2K3 Workstation - an awful lot of stuff doesn't work well on Sever 2K3, and as a result, on XP64.
Re: Bioshock 2 Good on XP32 Poor on XP64
Try disabling sound or using onboard. That might narrow down the problem area.
Driver support on XP64 always was a bit naff though. You'd be better moving to Vista or 7 x64 - they're pretty good.

I'd go with this. Sounds like shoddy driver support to me. I'd rather run Vista x64 than XP x64, and that's saying something ;)
EDIT: p.s. obviously you should be looking to upgrade to 7 x64 though, which is miles better than both of them...
Re: Bioshock 2 Good on XP32 Poor on XP64
+1 bin XP64 and get W7 x64. XP 64 is, was and always has been naff at everything.
Re: Bioshock 2 Good on XP32 Poor on XP64
I did try Vista 64. I hated it so much I "upgraded" to XP64.
Thanks for the comments - I'm going with the advice.
The balance of opinion here seems to be XP64 bad, W7 64 better, so a copy of W7 64 bit is about to be ordered.
Re: Bioshock 2 Good on XP32 Poor on XP64
I used the xp64 evaluation for a short while and thought it was okay then, but when you compare it with Win764 it is like night and day. Without a doubt, W7 64 is a vast improvement and is the way to go if you're after a new OS.
Re: Bioshock 2 Good on XP32 Poor on XP64
I too found that XP64 let me do more at once like leaving BOINC running in the background while running games, which is something that caused problems on W2K & XP32, but I never was really happy with the gaming aspects
I now have a copy of W7 32/64bit on order. I'm just not looking forward to the look of it as I've heard that the Windows Classic view (plain, simple, functional) is no longer available.

keep a tab open on http://www.deanliou.com/WinRG/WinRG2.htm if you want the true Win95 experience

@GreenBandit: you can disable all the visual effects if you wish, you end up with something that looks a bit like Server 2k8 if you've ever used it but the effects don't impact performance much since Aero uses your GPU. Something I do on 7 though is disable the icon-only groups which I didn't like and they only seem to slow things down when trying to switch between windows (right-click, properties on taskbar then select combine when taskbar is full for the taskbar buttons option) so my taskbar is similar to the Vista one now, just a little wider but you can have it the same size and gain ~5mm desktop space by enabling small icons but I quite like it and it shows date+time constantly which is useful IMO. :)

It's not available, but honestly I prefer the new 7 interface to XP's. It's definitely more productive overall.

Re: Bioshock 2 Good on XP32 Poor on XP64
Not available? Waaaaah!
I realise that I'm a bit of Luddite when it comes to fancy stuff on a PC desktop. Its not that I don't want (Vista's) Aero to use resources, I absolutely hate everything about Aero, its colours, its low contrast parts, moving wavy animations, see through places, I just hate it all. I know I'm on my own cos everyone else at work with Vista leaves Aero on. For me nothing it does helps productivity or screen definition in any way whatsoever. But we will see, because of the help I got last night from all those who posted on this thread, I will be trying W7 64bit sometime after tomorrow :-)

I will definately be trying this, cheers :)

Classic Windows view is available in my copies of Windows 7... :O_o1:
Although tbh the enhancements made to Aero in Windows 7 are really good, and i miss them when I go back to XP at work (which reminds me, must get my work laptop upgraded to 7 ASAP :D )
