HMRC software. Why no seperation of data and program!

Hands up who's seen the Her Majestys Revenue and Customs Employer CDROM? What a load of B*****s.

Basically i got a computer off this guy where windows has corrupted. So I sorted it out, got all his data back, and have now setup daily backups and etc etc. Only thing thats gone wrong is this damn HMRC CD. Apparently while using the software he had to manually click "backup now" to export the data to a .zip file. Otherwise (and please PLEASE correct me here) there's no way to get the data from the folders it creates in My docs e.g.
    Documents&Settings\User\My Docs\HMRC\EmployerCD2010

Is this is just what is to be expected from government software? Even Sage from 10 years prompts you to back up upon closing!

    Thanks for reading,
    Dan Gent

Surely you could simply reinstall from the disc, then copy the files off his old machine, overwriting the data on the new install.

Et Voila, the program is installed and has all the data it requires? As long as you are using the same version as was installed on his PC pre-crash, it should be fine

The simplicity of that is brilliant. That idea didn't even cross my mind!
Are you familiar with HMRC's software? Bit like "my first IT project" I think. It astounds me that under the MyDocs folder they have their compiled binaries.......

Assuming that they just make one version of the software and then ship it out to everyone on CD (only found one update and that was very public). What happened, after I reinstalled windows and copied his my docs folder back, you run the app.exe or whatever under mydocs/HMRC/CDROM2010, and it comes up, but then clicking on any buttons gives an error and it tells you to reinstall. After reinstalling the program runs fine, but when you choose the different options it has none of the data inputted e.g. employers.

I'll try out your suggestion and post back. Much thanks!

Re: HMRC software. Why no seperation of data and program!

This is the third year I've used the HMRC software. 2008 was quite good, 2009 (which was browser based) was truly horrid - 2010 is a little bit better.

You can choose where to install it - and I back up to a separate drive on a file server - which works OK - but the software package is clunky.
