    Web based questionnaire

Hello all you technical boffin types.

Right, I will see if I can clearly explain this.

I have been given a questionnaire which I have been asked to turn it into/ build a website with the questions on there. I feel I am pretty comfortable at creating websites but, the questionnaire side of things has thrown me a little.

Also, the person at work would like it linking to a database to record results which I am assuming can be done via MySQL or something ?.

But I was just wondering what is the best way/ how to do this?

I have been asked to get this done as soon as possible and if I could start showing some sort of results for tomorrow, then it would be ideal, even just small results.

I have some free hosting that gives me access to a MySQL database so *hopefully* that side of things shouldn't be an issue.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Cheers,
    DG (Tony)

    Re: Web based questionnaire

There should be loads of sample surveys you can take code from. Just googled "php survey builder" and got a few already.

Does it need to be your own site? there are a number of places that will let you build an online survey and they host it and put a few ads round it.

    Re: Web based questionnaire

Hmm well at first i thought it was just going to be a questionnaire for this one thing so I did think of one of these free sites (but i questioned the linking to a database to retrieve the results), but now the guy is talking about maybe having a customer feedback portal :s which would mean the ad's would be a no go. If it came to that, we may be able to use the same hosting that the company website is currently on, but the company are pretty tight on that sied of things.

Will have to have a proper google when at home, where half the internet isn't blocked >.<

    Cheers Funk

    Re: Web based questionnaire

The other option would be to advertise it as a freelance project - if it's a fairly simple questionnaire / requirement then you might find it's better to pay a (*cough*cough*manchester-based*cough*cough*) freelancer a one off fee to set it up...

    Re: Web based questionnaire

have you got any development experience? Any particular language that you are comfortable in (or have at least got a rough idea of)?

Sounds like the best way would be to develop a website in say ASP.NET (reccomended tbh) or PHP then chuck it up on some hosting space with a corresponding SQL Server or MySQL database.

If its for a client of yours i'd suggest avoiding free space mainly as it can be unreliable or contain adverts when you start doing server side stuff..asp.net space with an sql server db can be had for a couple of quid per month, so its not going to get expensive.

You would essentially create a single asp.net or php page containing your questions, and then at the end have a submit button that will collect all the answers and insert them into your database. It would be fairly simple to then have an "admin" page where you could pull all of this information out and display it. How you actually do it will depend on your language experience

That said, if you don't want to do it yourself then its a simple job for a freelancer as long as you have a clear set of questions, or it may work out cheaper to use one of the survey sites and pay for one (they tend to be quite cheap) - most will let you brand the surveys and redirect to/from it etc.

Its for the company I work for and I have no idea how long it will be used for. That also means, no money to spend.

This is what I was thining, but I have no experience in asp.net and very very little in php and even less when it comes to databases, it is/ was just something I was asked if I can do. Which it appears, thus far, I cant.
