email app just deleted all my emails, help?

I set up the linux's email thingy to check my emails from my hotmail account. And by default it downloads all the emails to the desctop client and deletes them on the server. By the time i noticed this, my few years of emails have dissapierd.

i still have them all in the inbox folder of the email client on desctop, is there any way i can get them back on to the server?

btw the soft is called evolution

Re: email app just deleted all my emails, help?

This is going to be a bit fiddly, as Hotmail doesn't support IMAP as far as I know.

The simplest (relatively) way I can think of is to use Gmail as an intermediate step:

    1. Create a temporary Gmail account if you don't have one already, enable IMAP *and* POP3 access.

    2. Set up Evolution to access the Gmail account via IMAP, then (still in Evolution) copy the contents of your inbox in "On This Computer" to the new Gmail inbox

    3. Go to your Hotmail home page, then Options > More Options > Mail > Send and receive mail from other e-mail accounts > Add an e-mail account, enter the POP3 details for your Gmail account, and it should import everything from the Gmail inbox.

    Bingo, you're done.

Re: email app just deleted all my emails, help?

Most E mail pop3 clients delete the e mail fromthe server by default, because that is the way pop3 is designed to work - and for an ISP for example - space is limited and they dont want e mails glogging up their system.

IMAP operates differently and is designed to have a central depository for mail so it is accessible from multiple computers (Exchange server works the same way). Leaving mail on the server in a POP3 environment is a 'workaround'.

But as for your question, no, you can't reload e mails back to a pop3 server once thet are down loaded, except by forwarding them all back to yourself.

BTW - the check box for how the server treats downloaded e mail is under account settings, third tab labelled "Receiving Options"

I'm not sure about Hotmail but some email providers keep backups you can ask them to restore, send them an email and see what they can do.

Windows Live Mail automatically syncs with Hotmail, as does Outlook via the Outlook Connector, but I think your problem here would be actually getting the mail out of Evolution - AFAIK it doesn't have an export format that either Live Mail or Outlook can understand.

Yes it can, but the problem is that Hotmail doesn't support regular IMAP - Gmail does, hence the roundabout method I suggested earlier.

Well in all fairness, "it" didn't muck up your Hotmail, you did by not being careful what you were doing (any other POP3 client would have behaved the same).

For what it's worth, I replicated your problem and the solution of going via Gmail works perfectly, although it's a bit long-winded admittedly.

I guess alternatively you could just use Evolution forward the mail back to yourself as peterb suggested, but the downside is that all the mail in your Hotmail inbox would then appear to be "from" you, which might be a bit confusing and inconvenient.

You need a TB addon/extension called mboximport.

Obviously use it at your own risk as it doesn't appear on the Official TB Addon site (that I can see)

Re: email app just deleted all my emails, help?

i know the gmail way works,

just my linux crashed with my network card, so i have no internet in linux so any solution would not work.

i plugged in a different network card and that worked for internet. But evolution doesnt like the newnetwork card and is not connecting to the internet with it on any accounts

The trouble is, if the OP doesn't have Thunderbird he'll have to spend more time installing and configuring it, and then (assuming the extension works as advertised) he still won't be able to sync directly with Hotmail, so yet more fannying around exporting the mail from TB to Windows Live or Outlook (a lot trickier than the other way round).

I honestly think the most foolproof way is to go via an independent IMAP server - as a slight variation on what I suggested above, if all the messages were uploaded to a Gmail account via Evolution/IMAP, you could set up both accounts in Windows Live (IMAP for Gmail, directly syncing with Hotmail) and use it move the messages from Gmail back to the Hotmail inbox.

    edit:

Assuming you have a Windows PC, perhaps you could could install the Windows version of Evolution, then use a flash drive to transfer the mail store from the Linux PC? (it will be in /home/user/.evolution)
